Hi guys,

i do some backups of corporate work here every night but it now seems we have loads of files over the max file path limit of 260 chars.

helpfully windows doesnt tell me what they are!

any way to remove this stupidly low limit or at least find which files are in too deep and manually sort it out (nightmare!)

cheers guys!

edit: bit more info. files are on a NAS. all machines are win7 64bit. backing up to USB HDD

The way that I manage them is install 7zip and use the file manager in that, the path limit is massive in that.

I think you can also map a folder structure from a folder share that is deeper down into the path, but it's a dirtier way than just using 7zip.

I do agree though, it is an annoyingly small limit. In the home environment it's fine, but in a work environment, people seem to use stupidly long folder/file names!

maybe will have a look at that but arent i then causing myself future issues?

yeah, so helpful when windows just says 'cannot copy 300 items, not telling you whet they are tho!!!!' grrr.

I can write something for you if you like. No guarantees it will work on your NAS, but I have done a test here and it seems okay. Email me if you want it.

I use total commander to copy files like this as it gives a rename option on files over the limit, and in a school it's an absolute nightmare with kids saving work with the whole first paragraph!

I will tidy up my code and post a link to it for you...... Hopefully later today, I just have to do some work first :(
