hello,

been playing Oblivion and was encountering frequent crashes (complete reboot). Read that starforce was a potential problem (didnt know what it was initially) and found it on my system (splinter cell CT seems to be the source) so I uninstalled it with the reccomended uninstaller. Since then, my memory performance has been slower - loading when entering rooms, and when exploring outside causes brief stutter while loading (was not happening before). I havn't experienced any crashes since (I have not played too much since removing starforce though), but have been wracking my overworked brain trying to fix the problem. Has anyone else experienced this, and any suggestions on how to fix the problem. I wasnt sure which forum to put this in (maybe general hardware or memory) but thought I would start here as it is obvioulsy related to starforce.

cheers

In PC Gamer this month there was an article about Starforce.

Not one single problem has been traced back to this program according to the developers/publishers.

It seems that the rumours that are flying around are the work of the software pirates because they have such trouble cracking the Starforce protection.

If i can find the mag ill pop some more info on here.

Also, would you not of been experiencing these random crashes when playing Splinter cell? Seems rather strange to blame Starforce if youve only been having this problem with Oblivion, the logical answer would be that its a problem with Oblivion itself.

you believe the developers saying "Oh no problem can be found with our anti-piracy protection?"

To be fair, they aren't likely to say : "Well yeah guys, it does sometimes cause problems with systems" :p

I've read about lots of people having problems, I believe the masses of error reports etc I have seen :)

Starforce trashed a RAID array here
The whole thing is a joke, especially when you see the games with no protection selling better than those with SF or anything else- Protection just seems to be becoming an excuse for shoddy games.
Also, take a very good look at things like thier competition- They're designed to be totally unenforcable and to give the false impression that they have no problems- NOT!!!

thanks for the info guys, Im not blaiming starforce, I don't have enough knowledge of their drivers to be critical of them, I just read that it was a potential cause for concern. After playing Oblivion for a while more, I have still had identicle crashes so as far as Im concerned, its not starforce at fault for that, but im just confused why simply removing their drivers using the utility they reccomend has caused a slow down system wide. Its interesting that it caused a raid array to crash, as I running a striping array, so I will check that out and report back if I manage to nail the problem.

Forgot to mention, since removing starforce, the crashes are only to the desktop now, not a bsod into a reboot.

The people who produce Starforce are pretty scummy - they put up links to pirate torrents of a game from a publisher that refused to use their software. Somewhat dubious. I wouldn't trust them.

I've read about how Starforce can affect drives and it sounds like it can get pretty nasty.

Starforce nearlly broke my CD/DVD driver

I was having trouble running anything off a cd, install shield crashing randomly amongst other things.

After reading a couple things about starforce I found out that it had set my CD drive to PIO mode and windows was reporting errors with it. I uninstalled starforce with the recommended uninstaller thing and reset my drive to DMA mode.
Now everything works fine, I must conclude that starforce was the problem

2 DVD burners killed here by starforce forcing them to PIO mode also the starforce devs are scum, they send emails thretning to sue people who post negetive articles about starforce.

I am not doubting you, but how does setting a DVD-RW drive to PIO kill it?

if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives).

found this on here http://www.glop.org/starforce/

Im gradually going through the registry and removin all the starforce entries, hoping this is gonna resolve my performance problem. Starforce was definately causing my machine to reboot during gameplay, Ive had one crash today (I uninstalled starforce yesterday) which is a big improvement. Ive been readin up on starforce, and many people seem to have lost raid arrays from installing it, so keep that in mind. Gonna reinstall windows 2morrow, quite annoyed as ive kept my system clean for 18 months from viruses, spyware, you name it. I also discovered that one of my sata drives (which wasnt striped and has never been since i bought it 9 months ago) is all of a sudden on its own stripe array! Sorted that out, but defo points to starforce messin with raid arrays. Can safely say that I wont be buying any starforce games.
