Removing a CPU stuck to a Heat sink

No the 990x then demand the cash instead of a replacement

Nah, you say it was this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-337-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1823 ;).

I did the same thing with my AMD stock cooler and because the AMD socket sort of goes down at an angle when fitting it the pins get slightly bent. One row of pins got so bent thing thing wouldn't fit back in the socket when I got the cooler off so I had to carefully bent the pins back into shape. Got it all working though :D.

My dad broke my Guitar Hero drum pedal is a similar situation. The wire casing on the lead was sticky and falling off so my dad said he'll get it off for me and proceeded to pull at the wire as to scrape the casing off with his nails and I specifically told him not to pull too hard or he'll pull the wire out, and he did .

Anyway, hope the CPU wasn't an expensive one or you at least had warrenty.

Always keep well meaning parents/children/housemates well away when the case is open... Mine dad tried to use a hammer to install a pci NIC card, with predictable results :(

Any chance you can guilt trip into replacing it with an i7?

The AMD CPU latching system is dreadful, you shouldn't be able to pull the CPU out of the socket when trying to remove the heatsink. I remember having this problem when I stupidly used the terrible product that is Coolaboratory Liquid Pro.

While we are at it...why oh why does AMD not use the LGA approach? Those stupid pins on the CPU are so 90s!

I think they do for some CPU's (socket F). As others have said, I've also done this, also on an AMD, also using the stock heatsink.

heat up then power off and keep twist carefully until you remove the HSF - I never use stock HSF with thermalpad that rubbish -- best with thermal paste which is easier to remove...
