I have a 55" TV so the fireplace is going to need to go as I dont think I will be able to fit it in.

How difficult is this to do by my self and how do I approach it?

I've done this before.

I simply removed any trim and mantel to expose the gas fireplace, then I hired a gassafe engineer to disconnect the fireplace and seal up the pipe in the wall. Then we just plastered over it.

I have done the same, removed this:

Did all the work myself, with the exception of the first job which was getting my gas safe certified friend to cap the gas so it was safe to pull it all out (fire and back boiler). If you are blocking it be sure to fit a vent.

Do you use the fireplace much especially in the winter and is there any other source of heating in the room ? You could just mount the tv where the mirror is.

I did this in our house but luckily I didn't have to remove the actual fireplace. When we moved in there was some god awful gas fire which was so old the gas engineer said he'd never worked on one before and it had no safety features or proper ignition. We needed to replace the old pipe running through the house as it was corroded and leaking so while he was doing that I got him to take out the spur to the fire. I then just ripped it out and skipped it.
