My girlfriend bought a new coat online which arrived today and it turns out it still has the security tag on!
We could drive into town tomorrow and go get it removed at the local branch but I really can't be bothered to go into town on a weekend and pay for parking etc so was wondering if it can be removed with general household tools without damaging the coat?

Here is the tag in question..

Is it a simple magentic clutch holding the pin?

Thanks!

I've just got back from Liverpool, I heard there was a right commotion down Liverpool One. :p

The discs don't come far enough apart to cut the pin and I don't want to put too much pressure on them in case the ink breaks.

I couldn't get one of them open with strong magnets, I did with a pair of nail clippers though. Braking the thin side of until the pin was totally exposed then braking the pin. Just working from the outside in, slowly cutting the disk away. It did **** the clippers up though. a little saw would be far easier, once the plastic on one side is removed I just bent the pin back and forth till it sheared, but some sturdy wire cutters would have been easier,

There is ink in the thick domed side though.

You could stick it in the freezer overnight. That should solidify the ink and also make the plastic more brittle. I would send it back though (at their expense) and get it removed properly.

This happened to me before.

On the other side there will be a smaller part which has magnetic ball bearings in it to hold the pin in. Use a junior hacksaw to saw through this then just pull the ball bearings out and the pin will just release.

Make sure you tape over the ink part a few times though incase.

Well my fun has been vetoed. Just as I was amassing a collection of tools to begin my assault she's called it off and phoned the company she got it from! :(

I ordered something from abroad once which had a security tag still on it. I used a hacksaw, first to cut through the plastic section, which makes a lot of mess, then through the metal pin. It probably took about 30 minutes or so as you obviously are trying to be very careful. With hindsight, I'd have just taken it into a random shop to see if I could get it removed there.
