Removing asbestos

Same here. Me and a friend found some corrugated (what I believe now to be asbestos) dumped in a field and we had a bit of fun karate chopping it etc :o:(. From what I have read the grey corrugated stuff is not as harmful as other types and its more people who have long exposure to asbestos that are at risk.

Enjoy the asbestosis :)

To the OP - wrap it twice in polythene sheeting and duck tape it shut. Take to the tip. Wear a mask, wet down the area if you think it might break (won't stop the dust just limit it) and you'll be fine.

As there's some in the loft are you sure there isn't any more lurking in the walls? It's when you start drilling and release into the air when you get the probs!

I would check that the stuff you have is actually piping and not the laggin left there from the old piping. This laggin can be the really nasty stuff. If its just the piping then like above its low grade 5% stuff and as stated as long as you wet it down and dont break it up, bag it up and take it to the tip.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm still undecided as to what to do. I think I've ruled out getting the pro's in as it's just not worth the money. I don't need the space that much.

So either I remove it myself, or just leave it there and insulate over/around it.

Got a pic today of the pipes so you can see what I'm going on about:

Well it's not worth ****ing your health up for a little bit of storage space.

I'd put it down as a bad job and insulate over it. Maybe securing it further with some polythene just to be sure its isolated.

TBH mate that looks in really good nic - no chips/cracks or anything.

Do as I said - wrap it up, double it up and take it down the tip.

Ok so its dismantled already, damp down, wear a face fit mark and overalls, double bag and dispose / bury

That's what I would do, however you need to get a specialist to remove (arse covering)

Is it not people who worked around this stuff for years of their lives that had ill effects? Im like a few of you who posted, i smashed this stuff up through out my childhood down the disused farm oppoiste my house. Never did me any harm.

HNNNNNNNGGGG.

As long as you wet it down before you break it up, try not to break it up too much. There are special places who will take it off your hands.

Correct - but it only takes one particle, a bit of bad luck and 20-30 years...

An old tutor of mine knew a husband/wife surveyor team - both died of asbestosis they got via their job. We're advised now if we think there is any risk - avoid (more for commercial run down premises rather than the problem the OP has).

I don't need to break it up. I could easily just pick it up and bag it as is, but I'm not sure how easily these fibres get kicked up and about which is what I'm worried about.

And the fact I don't have a dust mask, overalls, or spare gloves kicking about is making me think I should just leave it there and forget about it. I might do as jimbob says and just lay the polythene bag over it then lay insulation over the top. Just another bodged job added to the completed list!

It's fine - the particles will be released if you start smashing it up...which you won't. Get the mask i linked and you can get disposable overalls for cheap.

Personally I'd remove it rather than leave it there to fester and get worse. It will break down after time and then you'll have a much bigger problem...and if you ever sell your house and don't declare it and the next owner finds it you can be sued...

If those pipes were in my loft I'd follow the mask, damp, double bagging advise and get rid of it myself :)

This is the mask I bought for my DIY work: "3M 7502/3 Half Mask Respirator" @ http://www.safetysupplies.co.uk/trolleyed/5/index.htm - Filters are the next item down.
Expensive, but I've done some epically dusty work and haven't had any trouble with breathing in dust (I'm asthmatic)

They should teach kids the dangers of asbestos in school if this thread is anything to go by. There is loads of the stuff scattered about all over the country and kids don't know the dangers. To a kid it's just some board that you can use to make dens out of or smash up.

If you can move it without breaking it up then you're laughing. Find out how your local dump requires it to be wrapped. My dump would take it in bin bags, but as SeatIbiza has said your local dump may be more fussy.

As said already i'd have a go at removing that myself.

There isn't going to be a lot of work required to bag that up safely. Just wear the proper clothing, take your time, damp it down to avoid fibres getting into the air and you're laughing.

I'd also get a disposable boiler suit and bin it with the asbestos once you're done.

definitely. Don't forget your safety goggles and gloves either !
