I've found myself in a situation where by I need to remove two private plates from two cars.

I understand they both need to be MOTd etc. and that I have the option of either putting them on retention or transferring them to another vehicle.

What I want to know how much it'll cost either way - going on retention is fine, but I believe you have to renew this every year or two years - this isn't really the ideal situation, so it was considered putting the plates on cars where they could be put on and forgotten about.

OK if your using the cars, if not you'll have to MOT them when you want to take the plates off, may cost a bit, probably cheaper to keep them on retention.

Also it's your responsibilty to check retention payments, if you forget or DVLA don't send you the reminders the plate falls back to them

Just done exactly this.

DVLA charge £80 to transfer a numberplate from one vehicle to another.

If you wish to simply put it on retention, it costs £80 to transfer to retention, but when you transfer it back off at a later date, there is no charge. Once the plate is on retention, it is £25 a year.

I had a feeling it was £80. The cars the plates are going on will be in constant use, so the MOT thing isn't an issue, but the plates belong to an elderly lady, so the last thing she wants is to have to remember to renew the retention each year.

Thanks very much guys.
