Removing Scratches from a monitor?

I have just left a message in the customer service forum, I recently bought two 32" BenQ BL3200 monitors from Overclockers UK, they arrived on Monday and today I managed to get them both set up.

However I have just noticed both have some feint scratches on the screen with one of them more larger than the other. I am sure they have been mishandled in transit.

I have asked what is the next step to take, eg whether I can return and exchange them or if I need to contact DPD/BenQ regarding them.

Anyway, is it possible to remove the scratches myself or is it best that I leave them as they are and hopefully I can get them both replaced?

It's annoying having just set them both up and they look really great to discover they both have scratches on them :(

Where the screens not covered to protect them? are there signs of damage on the actual boxes?

Just RMA them you are within the 14 day period :)

Depending on depth you can remove them with a white rubber. ;)

If it was me RMA! :(

I am reluctant to use an eraser, I've seen some posts where people have tried this along with other ideas, such as toothpate and vaseline of all things :p

Luckily the largest scratch I managed to remove with some gentle pressure using a micro fiber cloth, it may have just been dirt but looked like a hairline scratch.

I have since discovered two new smaller scratches but I need to look more at the weekend.

The other monitor is definitely scratched but can only really be seen with the screen turned off.

Again will look more at the weekend.

The delivery was two hours late or so, when I phoned DPD they said the delivery driver was struggling with his workload and so another driver was going to meet him and take some of the deliveries off him.

I feel they have been mishandled in transit, they didn't even come with the invoices you normally find taped to the side of the boxes.

They did have that rather thin white material screen cover that slides off but they don't really protect anything.

DPD failed this time.

I can't even take a picture of them because getting the angle and right light is almost impossible.

I will look more at the weekend and see if at least one of them can be salvaged, I'm a little hesitant sending them back in case I get worse replacements.

the vaseline of all things works great. its like the autoglass chip repair stuff

What did customer service say about it?

They asked me to take some photos of it but I said it's going to be quite difficult.

Under normal screen light I cannot see the scratches anyway it's only with the screen off and tfor the smaller ones I need a torch to be able to see them, I think if it weren't for what I first thought was the large scratch I probably wouldn't of noticed, well at least not straight away.

I need to wait for the weekend and hopefully get some more natural light shining in on them so I can see more better.

I would just return them you are within your rights to do so its not worth messing with them you might just make them worse:)

You're probably right but knowing my luck the replacement ones will have worse scratches on them.

I did say in the custom service forum that some of the other scratches may just be stubborn dirt but I don't want to apply too much pressure on to find out in case it did make them worse.

Will see more at the weekend, but I won't be putting toothpaste or vaseline on that's for sure :p

As others have said, just RMA them

Toothpaste works as a very very mild cutting/polishing compound, that is why it has been suggested.

as others have said just RMA them, you shouldn't be spending time trying to remove scratches on something brand new and shouldn't have come with them in the first place :) don't want to make it worse and then not have the ability to RMA the monitors

Decided to just keep them, the first monitor with the largest scratch is pretty much ok, appeared to have been a scuff mark or something but it's' completely gone now and the two smaller scratches to the bottom are barely noticeable, you really need to try hard to find them and even then it's difficult.

The other monitor is scratched, maybe a 3-4cm scratch but as before cannot really see it unless you go hunting for it. RMA'ing them is fine but each time to do this is probably going to cost around £25 and then the replacement ones could be worse, plus the hassle of.

In the end I decided to just keep them, unless some defects to the screens occur I will just hang on them. They are not as bad as when I first received them now I have given them a bit of TLC, I will just try to forget about them, at least they are not really noticeable, in fact if you saw the monitors you would not see any scratches unless you stared and looked at them extremely closely and even then the monitor would need to be turned off.

Well as long as your happy...enjoy:)

Thanks, they are great monitors :)

If the largest scratch was indeed a scratch I would have definitely sent it back, I can live with the almost invisible tiny ones and the other monitor I have positioned away from the light as best I can and you cannot see it.

Cheers all :)

Second this. Worked a treat on my old 2407wp. A 3 inch scratch at the top right hand side of my screen. Worked perfect.

Not even I could tell where the scratch was after id worked it in correctly.

Should have just RMA'd them when I had the chance, one of them has now got a cluster of white cloudy pixels, not sure if dead pixels or not but I had a 27" BenQ monitor before this one which did the same thing, contacted Overclockers and looks like they cannot help:

Please be aware that all of our Suppliers and thus Overclockers UK conform to the ISO 13406-2 standard - the acceptable number of dead pixels based on screen size and resolution. Information on this can be found through any major search engine typing "ISO 13406-2" and the monitor brand name. Products with dead pixels of equal to or less than those defined within the ISO 13406-2 standard will not be accepted for return.

Should have asked ocuk to arrange collection for goods damaged on arrival for the original fault, i wouldn't be paying to send it back.
