Removing Stereo Unit for Dummies!

IIRC from removing the sony unit from my mazda you need to do the following :

In the second picture you show the unit without its face on, around the edge of the unit is a black strip, this should clip off, once off this will reveal the units fixings, i don't think the sony unit needs push in flat keys (ala kenwood) instead get a coathanger and make two of these :

Jam them in the holes and pull the unit towards you, unclip the iso adapter and then remove the units cage.

That looks rather like an old model sony head I used to have back in the early 90's. It did require two flat keys, one on each side to release it.

The keys were about 0.9mm thick, 4cm long, and about 8mm wide. No special cuts or anything, just straight rectangular pieces of metal.

Pretty sure I can see one of the flat key slots, on the top edge, near the right hand side, directly above the face plates electrical connection. Cant see the second slot, but it could be on the bottom near the face place locking spring.

Sure mine didn't use keys, but then again mine was the updated version with the volume knob on the front not buttons.

Even if it did use keys i don't think you can see the slots cause on mine the surround has to come off first.

Oh, and on my Sony Xplod headunit you have to unclip (two top, two bottom) the black surround.

This should then show a silver surround that is the case of the headunit. This then slots in to a cage in the dashboard.

Maybe try a car audio specific forum for advice, somewhere like caraudiodirect?

No, the key is even simpler than that, totally flat, nothing epecial at the tip. I've probably got a couple up in my loft somewhere, from when I used to own the 'sony' version of that exact same stereo. (Which was ripped out of my dash without using the key, breaking the din hole :(. )

I'll look for a piccy, But I swear thats one of the key slots above the electrical connector right near the top edge of the unit. There will be another slot somewhere too, need to either use two keys, or use one key, tug that side free by a few mm, and then unlock the other side.

This is the closest I can find to the keys my Sony used. These are not 'Sony originals', but they are very similar, and apparently fit a sony radio. The originals were just a handle, plus a blade which looks very like the end (the narrow part). But as you can see, its just a totally flat piece of metal, it just slides in and pushes the clips away from the locking taps on the mounting cage.

I have to say the cages tend to distort a bit, so even with two keys inserted it can still take quite a tug to free the radio, and also the wireing harness can get caught up. So be firm, but still carefull, as you will be better off if the wiring harness remains undamaged.

Good luck.

So you have taken the plastic surrount off and slid the rods in?

You realy have to push the rods in hard so it pushes the clips out the way, then pull it. AFAIK its only jap manufacturers that bolt the headunit in at the back. My mate had to get behind the dash and unbolt one bolt before the HU would come out witht he rods.

The surround is fixed on, dont try to remove it. Its only the newer sony headunits where it comes off. Just push the keys in all the way, and then pull carefully but firmly. There should be two key slots, it can be removed using 1 key, but two makes the job easier.

(as your link said, it is possible to remove the front by removing all the screws, but unless its seriously jammed in, that shouldnt be needed).

I think I probably had about 5 different Sony's back then, as my car was broken into several times ;(. Anyway this is a picture of the CD model, of a very similar age to yours, I have circled the locking tabs, yours may be in slightly different places, but as you can see all they are are simply tabs. The flat key simply pushes them inside the unit, allowing removal.

Generally it is a tight fit, so even with the keys, you have to pull hard.

The alternative, which also works, but takes more care, and assuming VW used the standard sony cage... You can see in the photo the cage is only held into the car using those press out tabs. Sometimes its possible to slide a thin screwdrive around the edge of the stereo, and press them back down again. Then the whole thing comes out cage and all. There are pushout tabs on all 4 sides of the cage though, so it depends how fussy VW were when they installed it.
