I used surgical alcohol from boots and cotton buds. Worked fine for me.
Kitchen roll all the way!

Thanks for the heads up, I shan't be doing that again in a hurry!Use nail varnish remover with caution. Some are acetone based which melts plastic. Kitchen roll and a little patience all the way.
+1 I don't think it is possible to remove all of the old TIM without using some kind of solvent that breaks it down. I would also be wary of soley using tissue / kitchen roll because this can easily leave fibres behind.I'm a strong advocate of using some sort of solution to remove all the TIM from the cpu, including from the minute crevices on the surface of the IHS and cooler, rather than just scraping it off with some tissue.
