Renaming for MP3 Player

I am trying to consolidate a load of audio books so have ripped them to MP3 and now need to burn to single cd - problem is, my car cd player needs a shortish filename - no problems, can rename easily enough but if I have
name 1
name 2
name 3 etc

etc etc when it gets to name 10, name 11 it then plays them out of order:
eg.
name 1,10,11,12,13,14,2,20,21,22,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10

Is there any way to rename the files so they play in order?
 
Have you tried renaming the single-digit files to "name 01, name 02, name 03" etc? If they run into three digits, you'll need "track 001, track 054, track 127" and so on.

/edit: too slow as usual...
