Hi,

Myself and a friend are going to look at a Renault Scenic for him tonight, as he's got his 3rd child on the way. (at 24  )

We're going to look at couple, both on a V plate, 1.6 - not the ideal engine choice, but its for carrying a family around, so its not a preference.

Apart from the usual, is there anything specific we should be looking for, ie bodywork issues, anything in the service history etc?

Many thanks :)

Cambelt! Makes sure it's had a recent replacement, make sure front arms don't knock - make sure it's not using any water.

My mum had a 51 plate, and it was a fantastic car, but the coil packs tend to fail quite often on these which was a bummer, other than that, it was a decent car :)

Coil packs
Cambelt
Phase pulley
Phase sensor
Crank position sensor
Lower arms
Lower ball joints
Electric sunroof
EGR faults
Clutch slave cylinder
Front window regulators
IAC faults

They like almost all renaults and french cars are bags of poo.

scenic's are rubbish the petrol engines are awfully gutless, electrical faults are plenty and in particular the dodgy card system and windows. The diesel is a much better engine compared to the petrol as it has so much more torque
the picasso 2.0 HDI is the better car out the two if you have to have a french people carrier

Blah blah blah what a load of rubbish.

We've had a series 1 Scenic for 5 years and it's just coming to the end of its life. We've never maintained it and nothing has ever gone wrong. I think the previous owner changed an electric window switch and had the cam belt changed at 70K miles.

2 litre petrol goes well but I hear the 1.6 is pretty gutless. It's quite a small engine in quite a big car though.

Autoboxes start to play up around 100K miles as they are sealed and non-maintainable. Our one has managed another 35K miles but is definitely starting to give up now. Manuals will go on forever basically.

I've got a feeling the series 2 Scenic is the one that gave it the bad name. I don't think it was put together as well as the earlier car. I've been in both and the Picasso really feels cheap compared to the Scenic.

My girlfriend's parents have the 1.6 dci and it is pretty poor in terms of pulling power. They're trading it in for a 4 month old 2.0 this weekend (I wasn't even going to bother protesting) but I hear it's a hell of a lot better.

we had an x reg one for 3 months. it was a 1.4 and it was utterly gutless. it was the worst car purchse i'd ever made. still on the upside it had TWO sunroofs!

Well, after looking at 2 this evening, we bought the first one, details as follows:

V plate
Full leather
Air con
Electric windows all round
Recent cambelt, water pump and full exhaust system, as well as both front balljoints
MOT (with no advisories) until August 2011
Tax until end of February

Only problem is that the bearing on the alternator pulley has collapsed, so the pulley itself is rubbing on the housing - quick swap for £30 :)

Can anyone guess the price we paid?

My advice would be to buy a zafira or allhambra instead, or a derv x5 if funds can stretch. French car electrics are prone to going wrong, seen several scenics and clios go **** up even just recently locally.

Top notch reading skills there ;) :p
