Back in the early 80's I owned a Renault 9. From what I remember of the car the gearbox was clunky and the electrics i.e. the lights were problematic. After owning that car I vowed to never consider another Renault, but the Captur looks appealing and would suit my needs. I have yet to take a test drive in one, but am hesitant if the same problems still exist today..
Have Renault improved the electric faults and is the gearbox less annoying?

Time has moved on considerably since the 80's and, for all intents and purposes, Renault (and other manufacturers) may as well be different company now.

Even then, I'm not sure Captur's are old enough for any electric/gearbox faults to present themselves.

Get a test drive in first.

I think you should ditch that stupid idea and go for a Twizy F1 instead.

Much more sensible.

Would you own a Nissan? That's probably where the majority of parts come from for Renault cars now. Give it a test drive, as that's the only way to decide.

Is it not the other way round? The Renault Group own 48% of Nissan. I know the Quashqui has the same engine as the Clio.

My better half had a 15 Plate Clio Diesel, she does a lot of miles and has never had an issue. (Yet)

Had an '03 172 Cup with no electrical faults, an '04 Clio dCI for 11 years with only 1 electrical fault in 120k miles, got a '15 Clio diesel with 12k miles so far and not had an issue with it yet.

My 05 182, had zero electric faults in 120k+.

In fact it hardly had any faults in the 4 years I owned it, my least amount of trouble with a car ever,

Renault, Nissan and Dacia are the same underneath the bonnet these days.
Renault are a lot more reliable than back in the 80's thats for sure. Pretty decent cars if you ask me, just not the easiest to work on.

French car = avoid, they are all dreadful.

Nope.

Despite being a German convert, there are some older French cars that are better than you'd expect. I still go a bit twinkly-eyed over my old 406 Coupe V6. I don't think much of most of the recent stuff though tbf.

I can't remember any of the details about the whole deal but I reckon they've probably ditched any of the previous problem parts in favour of Nissan's either way. Although they've not been too bad recently, whereas Peugeot/Citroen

A few months ago when I was looking around for a new car to buy I saw this one listed...

Needed a new water pump and a new timing belt at only 14300 miles

the old peugeots were good motors, theres more than a few 306's with 200k+ rolling around this neck of the woods.

wouldn't buy a modern peugeot, or any french car myself, still have ptsd from me ma's old 106 which did more miles on a tow truck than under its own steam.

I doubt the resale value on a renault will be much. I always buy cars with a mid-high resale value. Jap scrap ftw...
