Renault

I had these same worries before buying a Renault Grand Scenic 1.6 dci.

I previously had owned a w reg clio which had all sorts of problems, speedo, windows. All electrical. I was really put off by this and of course the fact French cars have a bad rep for electrics.

I was in the market for a people carrier, the grand scenic ticked all the boxes I needed.

I have had no problems, touch wood, though yesterday the car did state "low battery start engine" and then I was stuck with a "charging" message on display. The battery has charged fine since and no longer displays the message after a short 3 miles journey, so I think things are okay.

I have owned it since April this year, it feels solid, the build quality seems to be there now and you can tell Nissan have an influence. Renault diesel engines are really good engines, especially the 1.6 dci. Do you think Nissan would put them in their cars if they weren't?

Only niggle with the car is... Mine has a panoramic roof. I thought it would be a good thing, but when it rains or condensation forms on the window, the water seems to pool on the roof. If the water hasn't evaporated yet, and I want the windows open, if I drive and turn a bend the water comes flooding through the windows directly on to the electrical buttons for Windows / doors / mirrors.

This was definitely a stupid thing that has been overlooked and clearly never tested. Without the panoramic roof however, I feel this would never be a problem.

I didn't have much choice in the decision as nothing else fitted the bill other than a Ford s max within my budget. The s max was still 2k more.

If it were me I'd get a mokka over a captur. Parts costs and ease of repairing things yourself would be my reasoning.

Although I'm not a fan of French cars in general, I have fond memories of my dad's old 1985 Renault 25. It was a lovely thing - big, comfortable and at 5 years old, I remember thinking it looked fantastic. Dad loved it - I think he owned it for 7 years and in that time, nothing ever went wrong with it. Eventually some scumbag stole it and it was written off as a result of the damage caused :(

Haven't seen one on the roads in the UK for years, but a couple of years back I did see one parked up in France, looking a bit sorry for myself. Girlfriend couldn't quite understand why I was so excited.

See you cant give me a single example so pull the old "cant be bothered explaining" line when you have no decent comeback. :p

I have a Renault Megane RS250, its well put together, its fast, and it's an awesome drive. It was also highly reviewed on release and has proven itself to be one of the fastest hatchbacks around the ring.

It's not a bad car at all.

Having owned French cars in the past, I don't think I'd own one again. No idea what the current generations are like, mind.

I'd quite like a Clio 182 or something however I just know that I'd book a track day only to be wondering whether it would make it there and back.

Nope. I'm just seriously lacking in arsed to explain in stupid talk what a ridiculous statement you made.

Its my opinion, just because you dont agree doesnt make it ridiculous. Acting all immature because you have a different opinion is something youll grow out of eventually.

I don't think it's fair to make blanket statements without experience though.

I've owned a 306gti-6 which had broken Air-con and a dodgy window regulator, but the rest of it worked as intended. Engine and chassis was fantastic.

Also owned Honda and Ford cars. Both reliable enough!.

To be honest though, the difference in reliability or quality between any of them has been minimal.

I did years ago. Anyway, just to prove how stupid your statement is, here are the top 100 most reliable cars at the moment.

The French have 3 cars in the top 20. The Germans have 1.

If that doesn't prove what a stupid statement that was; I don't know what will. As for your "grow out of it" statement, I've been driving for more years than you've been alive, so please think before you hit submit in case you make a fool of yourself again.
