Just a quick question really. Did AA last October via Quidco and eventually got my £60 cashback. I took out home start + relay + parts & garage cover which worked out something like £160 or thereabouts. AA just sent me a letter including a silver membership card and that they would take £238 this October, and that's with 25% discount. How nice of them! I've rung and cancelled that and will let the membership expire. I also only want roadside + home start this year. That parts & garage up to £500 is a bit of a waste of time imo, there's too many disclaimers as to why you can't get new parts, because of wear and tear, etc.

Online through Quidco, roadside + home start works out at £90, and then £20 cashback making £70. My AA membership expires at midnight going into the 13th October. As I know they normally insist on 24 hours from starting membership to when you can call them out, should I do a slight overlap and renew via Quidco on the 11th? Sorry for being long winded getting to the question! :p

"Cashback is for new customers only. If you have received a renewal invite from The AA for Breakdown cover in the last 60 days then your cashback will be declined."

Good point, didn't spot that.

Ok, well time to rejoin RAC then. RAC is quoting me £79.99 with home start which is better than AA. It says new member price £120.50, minus online discount of £40.51. Quidco RAC cashback is

Value of Product purchased £51 - £100/ Cashback £25
Value of Product purchased £101 - £150 / Cashback £45

I assume I'll get £25 cashback based on the £79.99 and not the £120.50? Haven't used RAC for a year or two, but they're ok aren't they?

I usually swap between RAC and AA through Quidco every year, seems to be the best way to do it.

Have you found RAC to be just as good as AA? I've always had a good experience with the AA, called them out about three times this year and they've solved issues very efficiently, and always friendly and polite.

That's a load of rubbish, I've cancelled at the end of the 12 months and signed up again through Quidco every year for the past 4 years and never been declined once, and I swap between AA/RAC depending who's cheapest. Just remember AA/RAC always take 6-8 months to cough up the cash

RAC have two months free at the moment so it beats AA on base price and after cashback

Interesting to know that, although RAC is currently cheaper.

Can't get cashback with the offer though.

d. This offer is not available to new customers who purchase RAC Breakdown cover via price comparison or cash back websites

Seems a lot of hassle when you can just pay AXA, Green flag etc etc £40 for the same service off the bat.

I've never used Green Flag but yeah, only £45 for roadside + home start. Anyone here used them, are they as good as the big two? I know Green Flag have been around for a while now.

They use local contractors, I have used them once, they turned up when they said and towed the car. Can't really say much else as the car was not fixable at the roadside.

This thread is quite timely as my cover is due for renewal next month. I quite enjoy the discounts you get a moto services with an AA card (20% off at Costa etc.) so I like to stick with them but it looks like I'll have to use my dads details to sign up as a new customer to take advantage of cashback offers.

Interesting you say that. On honestjohns, there's an old thread with a discussion about AA v RAC v GreenFlag. One bloke who has used all of them says "Green flag are quite good at getting to you in less than an hour, but in my experience they are best treated as a recovery service - they do very little to fix any problems."

I think you get what you pay for and I don't want just some random towing service. I've seen GreenFlag vans with their cool looking mural/livery, but I'm betting they don't have as many patrols as AA or RAC. I'll prefer to pay a bit more for RAC or AA as I know they always try and fix things.

I was going to switch to RAC this year to take advantage of a cashback offer but AA (who I was already with) were able to match that offer over the phone. Always worth asking!

I got paid to have green flag for the year. Only £6 or so, but for getting that they gave me recovery plus. I got lucky with getting the wrong cashback :)

Guys my AA expires at midnight. I'm now deciding on two things.

1.) AA are offering an online deal of £50 Amazon gift certificate with roadside + homestart which is £90. I can sort of look at that as though it's only £40 for the AA service after receiving the gift token. It's only for new members though. If I let my membership expire tonight and join tomorrow, do you think that's enough to be classed as a new member or do you think I'd need to wait a few weeks before being allowed as a new customer? For example, RAC say "All prices quoted are available to new customers only. If you've had RAC Breakdown cover at any time in the past 4 months, please call us to renew your membership". So maybe the AA is the same?

2.) RAC are doing roadside + homestart for £79.99 with £25 cashback through Quidco. That amounts to £55 after cashback.

If AA don't allow me as a new member, then the RAC/Quidco would be the obvious choice.

What do you think?

I just rang AA and spoke to a woman saying I'm deciding between them and the Amazon deal, or the RAC cashback deal. She said I CAN join as a new member tomorrow once my membership expires tonight. I then asked if I can do the £90/Amazon deal now instead of waiting for it to expire and she said it should be fine and will get someone to call back. So looking good so far.

Did the AA not offer you a better deal when you rang to cancel? They do for me - each year they end up discounting it to what I paid inc Cashback...

Nope, not for me. I rang a couple of weeks back to cancel renewal which was some ridiculous amount of money. They'd sent me a new membership card with higher status, AA silver membership or something. They didn't offer me anything reduced to stay. I'll rejoin later and should hopefully get the £50 Amazon deal.
