Hi folks.

Purely hypothetical - I am currently an Irish national with dual UK citizenship, I live in the UK. Are there any potential downfalls to renouncing my British citizenship? As I understand it I would still be able to live/work in the UK without a visa, as well as vote and access NHS services.

I don't really 'need' both, and as far as I can tell, my Irish passport offers more benefits (see Brexit)

Appreciate your thoughts/advice :)

It’s not an answer to your question, but I’m very jealous. My wife’s father was Irish so she can apply for an EU passport I believe; unfortunately I’m not so lucky. :(

Only renounce it if you have a good reason to, such as a job that doesn't allow it.
Although I agree Irish citizenship has a lot more benefits.

If she wasn't born in Ireland she'll have to go the 'Foreign Birth Register' route, which is taking a long time currently (2 years last I heard) before she can then apply for the passport.

There is no up side in renouncing as far as I can tell?

Technically I think the UK Passport gets you into more countries without a VISA, so there is that downside. You might not go to them, but technically, in that regard, it is worse just to have the Irish one.

Despite the drop in value of the UK one (which you have covered off with an Irish one), I don't know why you would want to drop it?

Holding dual citizenship is generally considered advantageous. However, the application process for it can be complicated and costly.

One of the main concerns of holding dual citizenship is also double taxation. However, if you have both a British and Irish passport, you will likely receive a double taxation ‘relief’ based on your exact circumstances, your income and the double taxation agreement between the two countries.

would he get to claim a pension from both countries if he is paying the double taxes ?

One of my relatives had a Norwegian pension and a British pension, no ideas if he was meant to though.

I'm not sure why OP would want to drop British citizenship. We don't know what will happen in the future.

Also if you have any children if they want to get British citizenship it would make it harder for them.

I know some Americans drop their citizenship because being an American citizen means they are still expected to pay tax even if they don't live in the US (or fill out big yearly exemption forms).

It's not a real question. Nobody could be that idiotic.

I'm the same as the OP got both Irish and British passport.

Figure if you didn't want to fight in a war you say your Irish?

Irish passport is good because you are effectively European.

I'm an Irish citizen first folks, so not a traitor ;) As I said, it'a a hypothetical question, I simply wondered if there were any obvious benefits/pitfalls that's all.

Obviously if you renounce the British passport then you can shed all that guilt for all the colonising. That should be a weight of your shoulders at least. /s

More seriously, one potential downside is giving up UK citizenship you could, if you ever decide to go for a job role in the UK that requires certain levels of security clearance, find that you may not be eligible for it without being a citizen.
