For a lot of people £500 is a lot of money. Comment seems a bit detached. Especially needed when homeless and clamouring around for somewhere to live, in a world where everything is paid up front.

i dunno why you have a stick up your ass about landlords with only a few properties? however that is wildly missing the point which was being discussed. regardless of whether £500 is a lot of money, it is totally irrelevant.
a landlord who feels it is not worth the hassle of holding onto a £500 deposit from a tenant who has trashed the property shows that the system is not working properly.
You thinking that it is a hobbiest landlord problem because a big business can just swallow the money is an awful take imo.
just like a tenant who looks after a property should get their full deposit back without any hassle at all, equally a landlord should have no issues telling a tenant who has trashed the place that either they have lost all, or part of their deposit.
edit... just noticed the date on the post i missed the replies 1st time around. Blame diddums for necroing
