RUSSELL Brand is raising '70s TV hit Rentaghost from the dead - for a Hollywood film.

The comic, 35, will play newly-dead slacker Fred Mumford, who runs an agency hiring out spirits.

Warner Bros has bought the rights to the BBC1 kids' comedy and is said to be turning it into a Beetlejuice-style movie.

The original ran for nine series from 1976, with Anthony Jackson as Mumford.

Michael Staniforth played jester Timothy Claypole, Molly Weir was Hazel the McWitch and Corrie's Sue Nicholls was Nadia Popov.

A source said: "Russell's career goes from strength to strength. This is the ideal vehicle for him, it was one of his favourite shows as a kid."

Russell Brand is being lined up to star in a Hollywood movie remake of classic children's TV show Rentaghost, it has been revealed.

Warner Bros has acquired the rights to the cult BBC show with a view to producing a Beetlejuice-esque comedy for the actor, according to Deadline.

Brand will play lead character Fred Mumford, a recently deceased slacker who attempts to make more of himself in the afterlife than he did in his actual life by setting up a temp agency for the dead.

Kevin McCormick - who worked with Brand on upcoming film Arthur - will produce the picture along with Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun.

Rentaghost ran on the BBC between 1976 and 1984 and starred Michael Staniforth, Molly Weir and Anthony Jackson.

Russell Brand is about as funny as an Ebola epidemic and this idea should go the way of the dodo sooner rather than later.

On another note: Claypole for the win..!!:D

Bucking the trand here, but i liked RentaGhost when i was a kid

And althrough Russell Brand is rubbish as a comic, for some reason he's been ok in films up until now, plus what evascott has some merit, WB is a better studio then most when it comes to suits interferring. 20th Centruy Fox being the worst..

You're wrong, an Ebola epidemic is considerably funnier than Brand. ;)
