Me, my brother and a friend have been renting a house now for about 8 months, it hasn't been great, we thought it was abargain because it is a really large house, in a nice location at a cheap price.

But after lving here it soon became evident that it isn't as good as we thought.

The decor is really old school, but we just assumed it was bad taste or whatever but it seems perhaps that in relaity no one has lived here for a long time.

Our first issue was the toilet getting blocked literally every day. We phoned up the estate agent and have had a plumber out several times. He says there are too many U bends and it is just and old design and needs replacing. It has since happened again about 10 times, so much so I bought a tool to do it myself., now been blocked up for a few days, tbh I have just being going a work because this is such a pita.

Asbestos in the garage, was found by my housemate, told them but they haven't done anything about it, apparently they arn't legally required.

total lack of TV reception, we are not allowed to put up Sky Dish, probably have no grounds for complaint here but annoying as you can imagine.

Certain places in the house have damp comming through, have told the agent about this.

Also constantly the electricity is always going off. the house is wired up in a crazy fashion as it goes out in random parts of the house, fuse box is really old and outside, wet, very dangerous according to 2 electiricians and my dad who is an electrical engineer.

It went off again yesterday and this time no matter how much fuse wire we replace it isn't comming back on. electrician says it needs rewiring at a cost of 6k.
He also said there is no way it passed the electrical cert 6 months ago... yet when we moved in they said it had just been rewired???

I have asked for a NICEIC.

estate agents are now contacing the landlord while I sit here without electricity.....

Seriously I have had it with this place and just want to move out. I am on a 6 month rolling contract so as soon as I find somwhere else I am off.

Dunno if this is just a rant or I am asking for advice.

Well now you know why it's cheap!

Just move - if the landlord/agent are that crap, it doesn't really matter what legal options you have, it will take so long to get things done one of you will probably have died by the time they get round to it.

I can solve a few issues for you

How old school? If it's 60's then just buy a futon and get wasted.

Stop doing such big poos

Doesn't matter unless you intend on smashing the garage roof, plenty of places have asbestos in them and they're fine.

Powered indoor aerial or cable TV?

Yup, 60s/70s, already done shrooms twice.
my poo is small.
Don't go in the garage much.

I can't even get freeview, do you think if it isn't feasable to install a mast that transmits freeview it is going to be profitable to lay cable. Supprisingly not.

Basically it is in an area that gets channels 1-4, no 5 or freeview and it might be ok if they turned of analgue but I moved just over the border where it isn' happenign for another 2 years. And on top of that is in a really bad spot, everyone else has a dish or literally a 5 metre vertical ariel.

I am just going to move. Thanks.

Everything else I would probably be able to tolerate, but the dodgy electricity supply would be a bridge too far for me!

Your only real recourse is to move elsewhere. Unless the landlord is willing to drop £10k (or whatever) to modernise the house. Even if he does this, you will be inconvenienced for a several weeks while the rewiring is being done.

Anybody know what the outcome would be if the estate agents could not find the electrical certification?

Punitive damages and the like?

If I had no electricity there are at least 4 ways I could post from home:

laptops with dongle
laptops tethered with 3G phone
neighbours wireless
iphone

iirc if the house is unfit to live in then they HAVE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH ACCOMIDATION while work is carried out for the rest of your contract.
check with the CAB
