Renting a big house for the weekend

I'm thinking of having a big family get together in the next couple of years. Rent a big house for a weekend, have a takeaway and a few drinks and just spend a bit of time together.

The problem is that there's quite a few of us (~20 people), so the house would need to have at least 10 bedrooms, maybe a few more depending on the layout.

Most of us are based on the South Coast and we don't want to travel more than 3-4 hrs, so it needs to be somewhere south of Birmingham basically. Anyone got any recommendations on a possible venue that could cater for us, or a company that specialises in larger groups?

I know you can rent castles and the like, but they're crazy money. Would like to keeps the cost as low as possible without it being a dive.

10 room hotel/B&B and book the place out?

I stayed in a converted mental asylum in Manchester that could bed 20 but ya know, ghosts.

We stayed here for a weekend once for a stag do. Absolutely offit place. Has a swimming pool and all sorts you could get proper lost. Also the keycodes they used were the same for all the little lodges in the grounds so you could go have a nosey around them but obviously weren't much use since the mansion was huge. Everyone had their own bedroom and there was a sauna and all sorts. You'd loose people pretty much all weekend it was that big.

Changed a bit since we were there but they had a cinema room and table tennis and all sorts it was class. A few places advertise it

There are a bunch of Jacobean style manor/mansions dotted around Somerset/Dorset/Wiltshire which do accommodation and can be one of the better options for larger gatherings - subject to taste as some go a bit overboard with the style. Sadly the one we use I can't find any presence online any more so I assume they've closed up with the pandemic.

EDIT: I know nothing about the site - so just an example - but actually a site which covers it somewhat https://www.landedhouses.co.uk/england/dorset-somerset-wiltshire/

What's crazy money? Any place with 10+ bedrooms is likely to be at least £1000 a night, but surely you're splitting the bill?

Thanks for the suggestions all. I didn't realise air bnb did larger properties. I've never used it personally so would be a bit wary about making such a large booking.

I didn't really know what the going rate was. I was hoping for sub 3-4k for a weekend. I was trying to avoid suggestions of castles and the like for 10k+ :D

We've used AirBNB a number of times without issue, but I can appreciate your aprehesion when forking over £3k vs £300 for a long weekend :)

But yeah, once you get over the sticker price of some of these larger properties and work out the actual going rate per person it becomes much more palatable.

I mean, all things considered, £4k for 2 nights for 10 bedrooms works out at £200 per room per night. I'd expect something nice for that, but also consider you're paying for the privledge of sole use of a property, so there is always going to be a slight premium as well.

In the past I've found friends/family definitely lean towards paying a little more for these types of getaways when they see what kind of options are out there.

Hope you have fun though! :)
