Renting in Birmingham, areas to avoid?

Mmm yea, Balti is foul though ...well I think so. What we do need is more decent Sushi places.

I have lived within spitting distance of Birmingham for more than 27 years now and I can assure you it is not a 'great' place to live, it's largely a dump actually. True enough there are far worse places. I've traveled around the word quite a bit, so I have some perspective on this, and sure it's nice compared to Arusha in Tanzania or Bangkok in Thailand ...but compared to Munich or Ulm in Germany or Calgary in Canada or Bergan in Norway it's a '****-hole' ...a dirty, angry, dismal place, full of drunks and feckless morons.

When you travel to places that are 1st world economies and even many that are not it makes you realise just how dirty and dismal Birmingham really is. Indeed the UK in general is such an angry place, so many people are so very angry about ...a lot of things all the time and the national answer to this seems to be drink. It's depressing and and quite frankly worries me ...I worry for our future. Heck I'm planning to get out in 4-5 years time as I just don't want to live here anymore the way things are, I don't want to have to watch Britain, my home, decline and fall apart. And Birmingham to me is a pretty typical example of this, it's ...well it's not 'THAT' bad but it's a long way from being a nice place to live.

Anyway like I said, there are places that aren't so bad, I mentioned them in my previous post.

That is certainly the most appropriate distance from Birmingham. ;)

To the OP: I lived in Moseley for a few weeks, then Acocks Green for a few months. Both dull and depressing. Don't even think about Small Heath, Handsworth, Ladywood, Sparkhill & Sparkbrook, for obvious reasons.

Hall Green, Handsworth Wood and Harborne are all OK. Shirley and Solihull are great if you can afford them. Edgbaston is quite nice, and ideal for the cricket obviously. Sutton Coldfield is glorious (wouldn't bother with Wylde Green). Selly Oak is a reasonable compromise, thought the high street is basically solid at rush hour.

Birmingham itself is a hideous, soul destroying place with very little history and almost nothing of interest.

LOLBirmingham, that's what.

I've seen fatal car crashes more appealing than that place.

Hehe I couldn't agree more. I sometimes wonder what planet people people are from when they say it's great, well maybe if the extent of your experience is Leeds, Bolton or Milton Keynes ...or perhaps Belgrade then yea, it's not so bad. But really, no, it's ****.

Oh I forgot to add, whatever bad things you can say about Birmingham, it's not short on history and is well placed to provide easy access to a lot of interesting things.
