Renting in London

Depending on where the office in question is - commuting by BR might be a better choice - if your work is close to Victoria, you can find fantastic places to rent for under £700 in 15 minute away Bromley. You'd be home faster than it would take most of your London workmates to fit into tube carriage. Londonwise, you can still find flats to rent on Isle Of Dogs/Canary Wharf for under £800, usually around Telegraph Road village, which is not the worst place to live to be honest, especially if you work in Canary Wharf or Bank.

Will your other half be working or will she be a lady of leisure?

£35k isn't a huge ammount for working in the city, but nor does it put you on the breadline. However, if will be the total income for the two of you I'd suggest living well outside London and living with a reasonable commute rather than trying to find somewhere in the city.

@Von - He's going to be near London bridge, but I'd still suggest Bromley or Beckenham.

Alternatively, live somwhere like Bedford which is 40 minutes to St Pancras or Winchester or Basingstoke which is an hour + ?

Hmmmm....... I put aside a grand a month towards a deposit. 5k pales in comparison if thats what you mean.

Why couldnt this job be in Birmingham?!?!?!

Oh yeah - Bromley, Beckenham, even Dartford is 25 minutes by train and trains are every 10 minutes in peak.

If the job is in London Bridge, there's plenty of relatively cheap places on the Jubilee line. There's a lot of new housing around Canada Water and the east end (Canning Town/West Ham/Stratford) is cheap by London standards. 1 bedroom flat by Stratford station (Zone 3) will probably set you back about £750/month.

Ah, you're working near me :p

Screw South-West london (:p), the District line is total ass, and it's a PITA getting back from Central London in the evening. Much like Clapham area, that's just as annoying, with the ridiculously heaving trains at rush hour.

There are a few apartments in Brick Lane which are pretty nice and reasonable (c. £800pm) with the bonus that you could walk to work every morning. Likewise in London Bridge there are some decent finds there.

The 'inner' Docklands have some good places with new builds for quite decent rents, Limehouse etc - again all walkable to work for you.

Otherwise I'd look at North London if you're working in the City, occasionally you get cracking places around Highbury - on the Victoria line and an overland into the City, plus easy to get back from central London.

Is your missus going to be working as well? Bear in mind £25-£35k is often a starting salary in the City for 'young professionals' so if you're starting on £35k that'll probably increase reasonably quickly.

I'd say come here anyway, London's the best city in the world IMHO and has loads to offer in entertainment and employment prospects :)

No way, stay away, pole invasion !!!!!!! ;)

*Puts bottle in CLAWS mouth and lets him suckle*.

Try ST,albans, pretty nice around there, and further south from bedford meaning 25mins into pancras.

Sad reality of London living I'm afraid. It all looks very glamorous on paper but you are forced to live a very modest lifestyle because of your costs and you have no hope of buying your own place any more. I'd hate to have to rely on public transport again, any idea how miserable it makes visiting people when you're stood there in the rain waiting for a train that then gets cancelled?

EDIT: You're looking at a bit of a mission to walk from limehouse though! Canada water, as already mentioned, is new and has ncie places for not much money, great for canary wharf, not bad for the city.

He's right, north london may be your best bet for the city. I live in clapham south and pay about £1200 a month for a two bedroom place. The tube at rush hour is unbearable (I get round it by either going in early at 7 or staying in bed till 10).

I'd seriously look at somewhere 30-40 minutes out of london on the thameslink route if I was looking again, north london is likely to get you more for your money. Somewhere like swiss cottage isn't a bad bet either.

You can live within walking distance of the city (mainly aldgate / brick lane way) but it's not the nicest part of town and it's dead (brick lane aside) at the weekends.

It depends what you're looking for, I'd miss clapham if I moved, I like having the common handy for a walk on saturday and there's plenty of good pubs. If your interests are different though you might be better off elsewhere.

I'd suggest Canada Water for London Bridge. Can get buses there in 20-25mins depending on traffic or the jubilee line is two stops. Nice enough area, close to Greenwich/Canary Wharf/O2 as well as being in easy distance of the West End.

I live in Charlton which is 20mins train to LB.
£100 travel costs (zone 1-3) travelcard

Didn't realise I could charge £1200 to rent out my 2bed :D

Cooooooooool!

PS That is not an offer - sorry ;)

I can't remember ever getting wet waiting for the underground. :p

The downside of course is there's nothing there, you can't pop down the road to the pub because there aren't any. If you want to go out it's a bit of a trek...

Still, it's a nice place to live apart from that, lots of places are convenient for london bridge (anywhere without underground will be a lot cheaper). I have a few friends in sydenham, which is surprisingly nice...

Id be on about 35k.

Someone tell me if Im being silly passing this up.

only you can answer that - i.e. what are you earning now vs what you will be earning - the increased rent/cost of living

also will your hours be more or less, is the company better, do you have more opportunities for advancement

perhaps it might be not much difference in the short term but the role may lead to bigger and better things?

btw I work in the city and live in north London (Islington) - you might be able to find some reasonable properties round the Caledonian road area - tis quite close to the city commuting wise if that is where you are going to be working

You might want to consider Essex.

There are places in Wood green, Arnos grove, Battersea etc that are affordable.

I live in Barons court... 400 a month plus bills in a flat share

you are just round the corner from me, i'm at the Standard.

on topic, 35k for two people is not a great deal but is liveable if you hunt around. all areas of london are very different so you need to find one you like, personally I love where I am, villagey feel, lots of open space but easy to canary wharf and the west end.
