replace my 7990

There you go :)

I wouldn't be too disappointed about your 970's OC abilities tbh. It still hits 1300+ at least, and you probably wouldn't see anything major in the way of extra fps were you able to get 1500 odd I reckon.

Another 970 should sort you nicely.

put it this way m8 i'd rather have my card than the MSI, have you read all the problems they're starting to have ;)..............cruel laugh .:D

the GPU clock is the only one less than 1300.... the other two are much higher and go much higher still, it's not a bad overclocker at all, just not as good as those two

1214......2000.......1550.... is what it is at max, mine is

1214......1860........1350 which is roughly 8 fps less, it's stable at max above, just backed off to be safe

I went from 7990+7970, sold the 7970 in a PC made of spare parts, ran 7990 only for a few days, and now have a 980, so a similar path to you.

I have no regrets, partly because I have a RoG Swift and while my new setup IS slower than my tri-fire setup, it's also silent, according to my AX1500i PSU, I've gone from ~880W used to ~360W, meaning the room isn't boiling, and GSync is amazing, giving me a better experience even with a lower frame rate.

Here was my "pre 980" 7990 Fire Strike Extreme bench:

After installing the 980:

After overclocking the 980:

With Tri-fire, for comparison:

I'm going to pick up a 2nd 980 eventually but even without that the 980 is better. I ran benchmarks for other games (tomb raider, shadows of mordor) before and after too but the bit of paper I wrote the numbers on is at home.

I did notice that while average framerates were a little lower on the 980 vs the 7990, (I did the game benches before overclocking the 980), the minimum framerates were much improved on the 980, and with gsync, it was buttery smooth.

thanks, i just saw them cheap on Ebay and it got me thinking

the 980 is a real monster considering it's only one card

Hi rtho782,

I'm interested in adding a 7970 to my 7990. The benches show a worthy boost. Did you see a decent perormance boost in games? And was the 880W total system power draw?

Thanks in advance

Woodsta

880W was the total output power according to the corsair link software, so yes, full system. Power at the wall was a touch over 900W.

I added a 7990 to my 7970, so it was a massive boost for me, dropping back to the 7990 was't a massive difference, but framerates were lower.

What I'd say is that the experience (and my prior system, which had two 4870X2s for quad xfire) have put me off AMD for life.

Frame pacing isn't fixed on crossfire for DX9 games, and the crossfire bridge interconnect is limited to 900mb/s meaning enough for 1600p60 and no higher, if you have a 1440p144 monitor, or a 4k60 monitor, you will find frame pacing to be awful as the GPUs are forced to use the PCIe bus to exchange data.

I don't know that the boost from 7990->trifire is worth the hassle. If you are running at 1080p, or 1440p60, the 7990 is probably enough for just about everything anyway...

hi

i made my mind up getting rid of my 7990 give up with crossfire,

either getting

2 gigabyte gtx 970 g1 or 2 msi gtx gamer

or

1 gtx 980 gigabyte g1 or 1 msi gtx 980 gamer adding a second in december when i get some more cash.
what do you think i should go for?
is there much differance between msi and gigabyte ones or is there a better option.?

thanks for help

Thanks rtho782 - very helpful and informative. I have a 4k monitor so wanted a boost for the GPU horsepower required for 4k but with your experience it may not be worth it or see a difference. I only have an 850W PSU too so will be short on juice.

Maka12 - I'd go for 2x970's as they OC to within an inch of a stock 980 so essentially you'd have 2 x stock 980's for a tad over £500 G1's or the MSI's both great clockers. Dpends on the cards but both MSI & G1's are reported to exceed stock 980 performance by a smidge.

If you dont game at 4k the 980 option is also good with adding another later for a monster rig.

Good luck.

Sorry I can't give a more positive review!

I was using a 30" 1600p60 monitor, and it was... "ok" on that once the frame pacing improvements hit.

When I bought the RoG Swift, I found the setup to be stuttery and annoying. It really sold me on changing to nVidia quicker than I originally planned.

2nd 980 turns up tomorrow.... :D
