Replace my 8 year old machine - £1000ish

I built my current machine in 2007 so its time for a complete new system.

I'm a little out of touch with things now. I'm not aiming for the best of the best with this upgrade but something good that will do me for a while. I'm not expecting to play all the newest games at full res with all settings on high.
I would like to overclock to some extent (but not push it to the extreme) and was looking at the i7-4790K as a starter.

I guess the first question I'm having trouble with is which case? Theres so many and they all are quite different. I don't see myself doing custom watercooling loops but would consider having an "all in one cooler" for the CPU depending on the cost - if you think its worth it. I'd don't want it to be loud though. I really would like a case that has fan filters too. It needs a 5 inch bay because I have a hot-swap SATA drive I use for backups too. Also needs space for 2 internal 3.5" drives and the SSD. I would like it to be quite neat inside, but not obsesively so. Would also prefer USB3 and Headphone socket at the front too. The Corsair Obsidian 450D looks nice to me.

My requirements

  • Need a Case, CPU + cooler, RAM, GFX, PSU (modular?), SSD, maybe pre-braided cables ?
  • Screen is currently 1920x1080 @ 60Hz, but will upgrade in the future, so would like a little bit flexibility with GFX card or perhaps the option of adding a second at a later date.
  • Main reason for upgrade is I want to play newer FPS games. I'm still playing COD4 but fancy something newer.
  • I use Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop regularly.
  • I'd like an SSD for O/S but already have drives for data etc. So no need for a huge SSD, but would ike to get a fast one for reads & writes.
  • Would like 16GB RAM because its cheap and Lightroom and Photoshop will make use of it
So far, this is what I've thought would be a good start (nothing purchased yet!)

I realise its tight when you add in GFX & Memory & PSU so any help would be appreciated, budget around £1000ish

Did you also need a normal HDD for storage?

Here are a few quality specs below that also include a 2TB HDD.

You can get custom braided cablemod cable sets for the EVGA G2 PSUs which just happen to be made by Superflower. But I put Superflower in below as they are currently on offer.

I wouldn't bother with the i7 over the i5, save £110 and spend it on GPU power.
Thanks, I'll take that into consideration when I see the total price. Since I'm not going to the extreme with things will the i5 be ok ? I'll definitely want to overclock it.

Thanks very much Stulid. I'll browse through these later. I won't need a HDD right now.

Perhaps it's time for you to move to external USB 3 drives?
Also, you can get external hot-swap caddies for SATA drives, like this Icy Box for £39.98.

I already have USB3 too which I use for incremental backups and I use the hotswap bay for a full image backup to be taken offsite. Belt and braces :)

I'm about ready to go and place an order but could you give me some advice on the cooler.

Is it worth me going for something like the H110 ? or similar ? I have enough space in the case, but not sure if its really necessary. I like the idea as it frees up all the space around the CPU and assume its makes it cooler and not as noisey since the larger fans should run quieter. I am planning on overclocking but need it to run stable 24x7 so don't envisage me going to the extreme overclock.

Please remember the last time I upgraded was 8 years ago, and I'm unlikely to change this much in the future so I'd really like to get it right now :)

850 EVO is about the same speed as the Pro. i7-K and decent air cooler before an i5-K and water cooler, if total costs end up being the same, and you want stability (you have a 0.5GHz overclock at stock already + hyperthreading bonus).

Less noise isn't a given with AIO's. Once you set your custom fan profile to prevent them from ramping up too much, you can find that the pump can often be the source of most noise when idling. Varies from AIO to AIO and even different unit/same model.

Currently for gaming i5 is fine but as you're using photoshop/light room the i7 would probably suit you better.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I've dropped the AIO cooler and gone for a standard heatsink & dropped the 250 PRO for a 250 EVO and used the money for the i7-4790K. Since I was also a little concerned about noise, I'll see how this setup works.

Thanks everyone, looking forward to putting it all together

What are you upgrading from btw?

Currently running Opteron 170 @ 2.6Ghz and 7900GT 256MB so this is a big difference.

Can't believe it but the kit arrived before midday today. I'm sure it'll take a few days to carefully put together... I won't know what to do with it !!
:D

Well, its finally built and I'm very impressed... Certainly there was no need to worry about fan noise, these new fangled fans are very very quiet. :D

I've installed Win 8.1 64 fine and now before I go too much further I'd like to do some benchmarks -- nothing too crazy, just really to check its running in the right ballpark for the setup.

I'm very behind on these things --- any suggestions on benchmarks to run on CPY & Graphics ?
