My 8800 in the system in my sig just crapped out. Can anybody recommend something to replace it? The cheaper the better, but it would be nice to have a bit of a performance improvement over the 8800. Though I mainly use it for eve online @ 1900x1200 so doesn't need to be too over the top. May use it for other stuff in the future though...

What's your bugdet? A 5850 is a great upgrade from the 8800GTX, but if you don't want to spend too much then a 5770 or 4890 is the next best thing.

I'm in New Zealand, so the prices probably won't mean that much to y'all. But shopping around it looks like a 5770, 4890 or GTX260 are around my budget, lol. 5850 is looking just a wee bit much.

5830 is now actually worth considering, with the price now dropped to <£160.

There's a place that is selling XFX5830 AVP Edition for £164.99, so the card itself is like only £150.

Every popular etailer I looked at, the 5830 is still priced the same. IMO it's not with the premium over a 5770 even at 160, the performance is just not there and it draws the same power as a 5850, it's a botched card.

Average is price for 5770 is like £125-£140 depending on brand and make.

The etailer I saw on selling at those price actually got nearly 6000 seller ratings on google shopping, so it should be reliable enough.

The 5830 is not a bad card, it was just badly priced. They actually offer performance to 4890's level, and it is also very overclockable and would be ahead of 5770 if both are overclock to same clock/memory.

I think you really need to get out of the "5830 at £200 it sucks" mindset. 5830 is a very desirable card at £150 for those that can't afford £230-£250 for 5850 or doesn't have a fast enough CPU to keep up with it.

They will all be faster. The 8800GTX is about the same speed as the 4850 (slightly slower but not much). The 5770/4890 and GTX260 are all faster by about 20-30% dependant on game.

The 5770 is the slowest but has DX11 support, runs cooler and has lower power consumption and isnt far behind the 260 and 4890, the 4890 is the fastest.
If you get a GTX260, be careful on price and make sure you get a 216 not 192 core version.

Any of these cards will be good for you though, see what the best deal you can find is :)

Thanks chaps; I'm leaning towards the 5770. The 4890 seems pretty find to hard in stock anywhere around here and I like the idea of the cooler\lower power consumption and DX11 support of the 5770. And I'm more interested in something relatively cheap to replace the 8800 than huge performance gains; as long as performance is similar to the 8800GTX I'll be happy.

Hmm, come to think of it... I could possibly stretch to a 5850. (Though I'll no doubt get an earful from the mrs on the price)

But is it really worth it with the rest of my system? I doubt I'll upgrade anything else in the system unless it breaks; rather just replace the whole system at some point. Would the 5850 be worth it over the 5770 or would the rest of the system bottleneck it to the point it wouldn't matter?

If you are certain that you won't be upgrading your CPU in forseeable future, then don't bother even considering 5850 (especially since it is out of your budget). Your current CPU will bottleneck a 5850 by quite a margin. Forget about what I said about 5830 (I didn't take your CPU into consideration)...just grab a 5770 1GB (and may be overclock it). Any higher card would most likely not offer you extra speed/performance with the CPU bottleneck.

Thanks guys; went ahead and grabbed a 5770. So far the games I've tried seem real smooth and it's nice and quiet compared to the cooler I had on the 8800, lol. Relatively cheap too, so I'm a happy camper. Only issue is my x-fi stopped working after I put it in, but looks like a driver issue, so I'll post in audio section about it. Thanks for the advice.
