Replace Radeon HD2900 XT

Hi all,
I'm looking to replace this beastie, NOT to something that can get my 8 million FPS in Crysis or anything, but something that USES LESS POWER!

I use my pc for 3D work and the occasional game, so when upgrading last year I saw the 2900 on a deal here at OCUK at bought it, thinking yeah - that'd be good.

Sure, it brought about smoother games at high framerates, but you know what? I gradually went away from PC gaming (awaiting PS3 for that) and also, the 2900 wasn't any faster for 3D Apps (lightwave etc) that the Ati 9800Pro I had previously.
Its noisy as hell too, and uses HUNDREDS of watts when in use.

So its not really ticking my boxes any more.
Its a good card, just not for me.
In hindsight, bit of a white elephant to be honest.

Ideally I suppose a cheap Quadro card (or one that can be guaranteed Soft-Modded..:D) would be ideal for my needs.
I'd prefer a Nvidia card as ATI cards have openGL issues with Lightwave.

Considering the PC's not being used for games any more, has anyone any recommendations that would fit my bill?

My emphasis is on good performance in 3D apps / Photoshop etc.

I guess I'm down-sizing, which aint a bad thing.

*How much does a year old HD2900 go for nowadays? The sale of this could fund its replacement.*

Ta.

Depending on how much you have to spend:

Around 100-110=4850 (I know you said you dont play PC games but this would be a worthwhile purchase just in case and should be upgrade proof for a bit)

Around 60-80=8800GT, I went from a 2900XT to an 8800GT and was a nice upgrade, consumed less power and was quiter even though it was single slot.

wasnt a 9600GT very low power consumption?.

im going form hd2900Xt to Xfire4850's..... should be a worthy upgrade same power consumption but double the performance.

Christ what a bad purchase this GFX card was!

*Think I'm gonna be careful of buying "sale" items from now on. Some people know whats round the corner I guess.....

Thanks for the replies guys.

I sold mine on for around £100 around Feb time. My workmate sold his for similar a couple months back. I replaced mine with an 8800GT which was faster, quieter and cooler.. I since found a cheap GTX (£130) on Ebay so now have that! :)

CEX are offering £51 or so i think for the 512mb versions, £94 for the 1 gig versions. I assume theyre not competitors as everything they sell is second hand.

just checked on there website! yes that £51 is very true :) i might be trading mine in soon then :P thats an awesoem deal! my 4850's are only going to cost me £75 after rebates from newegg :D

Blimey, they'll give you a couple of quid more for an 8800 GT 512mb than they'll give you for an old G80 8800 GTS 320mb, and they'll give you about £20 more than the GT for the old G80 640mb version, rofl.:D
