Replace the DMF or not?

Hey all,

After a quick bit of advice, was due to trade my bora in but the gearbox isn't very healthy so has been removed and sent to a specialist. My mechanic said the DMF has slight play but its 'ok'.

Would you get it replaced? Apparently the slave cylinder needs doing but the clutch is ok (can't see how as the car has done 88k and I'd imagine its original?

Are you still trading it in after the gearbox has been fixed?

If yes = don't bother with DMF.
If no = change DMF.
 
The gearbox is looking expensive mate so I'm really unsure. The verdict from transmission place comes back tomorrow!

I'm tempted to keep it and get it remapped and drive it into the ground now.

Oh and lol at the price of these wonderful contraptions! Replacement flywheel for my 220T was £27+vat. These are circa £360 :(
 
Selling soon = leave it.

Keeping it = change it.

I am always suspicious when a garage says it has a bit of play but should be ok. I usually find that means it has the the amount of wear you expect on a component like this but I am being honest but it would be very nice for me if you choose to replace it.

Keeping the car it is definitely worth doing.
 
I'd trust the guy with my life. He always does odd jobs on the car for nothing and has been known to friends and family for years.

He doesn't want the car there as it ties up one of his ramps so the sooner its out of the door, the better for him. Add this to the fact that the parts cost me what they cost him - he only really makes on labour and he's reasonable at £25/hr.
 
For a car that hadn't been sold for fourteen years? I bet you it did.

Edit :

My one is now NLA but the closest at the time and the one they supplied incorrectly in the first place has only increased around £10 over what it was.

If you're keeping it I'd do the clutch and DMF as the box is out.

Will likely last throughout your ownership/life of vehicle. Assuming it's ~8 years old with 80k?
 
if you're trading the car in with a dealership, it surely isn't worth doing any work to it?

Give me your wage to top mine up for a month or two or failing that give me your Honda ;) failing that- employ me ;)

I can't rich as the cars I want I can't afford without a small amount of finance and I hate finance // believe you should only buy when you can afford what you want and I can't yet!
 
A house is a necessity mate so indeed that is the case, but a new car isn't! Otherwise I would have a brand new one on the drip!
 
Guys -

I got the car back friday, I've done some 350 miles in it and I can still hear a really bloody irritating whine on the overrun when you get down between 1500-idle revs.

I asked for it to be fixed, they apparently replaced eight bearings in the box and it still whines?!

Advice much appreciated here as I'm not very happy, particularly as the bill was substantially more than I expected.

Diff perhaps?

Whine on the overrun was the first clue the chocolate diff rivets were going on my 1.6 Bora. Dealer said it was fine at the service, three weeks later it punched a 3 inch hole in the gearbox casing...

Not aware of gearbox issues on the TDIs, but it's worth a mention.
