Replace Virgin Router??

Hi guys, just looking for some router advice. Here's the deal,......the village I live in is a heritage site, and consequently the trust that looks after the village refuses to let Virgin or anyone else dig up the streets to lay fibre optic cables, hence I'm stuck with landline-broadband rated at approx 2mb, and as I live a few miles from the nearest exchange, as you can imagine, my DL speed is tragic!!

Anyway, I was looking at some options for a better way of streaming to my PS3 downstairs (rig is upstairs) and was looking at the range of powerline products and will probably go for these:

That then got me thinking about the router that virgin supplied when we moved in, it's a Netgear Wireless ADSL DG834G v4, running at 54mbps.

Would I benefit from replacing said router with a faster one for when I install the powerline units? Would I benefit in anyother way from getting a faster router, or am I simply gimped by my crap broadband full stop.

Also, would there be a problem contractually, and/or with the set-up of a new router?

Thanks in advance guys, I'm a completer spanner when it comes to this area:confused:

A new router won't affect your broadband speed unless it was knackered.

The only thing you can do is to make best use of your line. First off, are you connecting the router into the master socket? And second, look into removing the bell wire as this can improve the speed a bit. There are loads of guides online for how to do this. Oh and third, check whether any providers at your exchange have LLU equipment, as if they have then this can sometimes help as well. You can check this on www.samknows.com and searching for your exchange.

Thanks Duke, yep i'm using the master socket. What do you mean by removing the bellwire. Do you mean the bellwire connecting the BT master socket to my router, and if so, what should I replace it with?

Thanks again:)

Just a report back. I've completed the bellwire fix and did a speedtest prior and after from this site http://broadband-speedup.blogspot.com/ . My prior speed was 27xxk, it is now 39xxk....quite a significant increase. Guess I have to wait the 3 days for my IP profile to be picked up and adjusted at my local exchange now.

Many thanks for directing me to this Duke, very much appreciated :D

I just got those Powerline adaptors and they work a treat with BT infinity. My virgin 50mb install is tomorrow so again i will take my laptop down and test the speeds :)

No problem, glad it helped :)

adslnation also do a filter which could help your speed a bit... google adslnation nte5 filter
It's a lot for a filter but if you can squeeze a bit more out I'm sure it will be worth the money!
