Hi,

I currently have a Nikon D2x DSLR that I have use for motorsport as well as general family pics.

We have a new baby and the missus is getting into taking more and more photos with it but it's obviously quite a beast and fairly heavy, especially when SB600 is attached.

I haven't really looked into new Nikon DSLRs and was after some advice on what would be a good replacement for it, that is good IQ, lighter/smaller frame and built in flash would be useful.

Budget is pretty low, pretty much whatever I can sell the D2x for, maybe £300? Would be able to add a little to this if needed. So maybe £500ish

What are my options? Definitely want to stay with Nikon but not sure what

Thanks in advance for any help :)

TBH, any of the recent Nikons take excellent images that are ranked top in their class, all will have better ISO performance than the D2x.

It will mostly come down to what kind of features you want. Since your budget is low you will have to give up some of the things that you are accustomed to, although Nikon has slowly pushed down tech from the pro cameras to the prosumers.

I think you would be most happy with a D7000 if it is within budget (probably is second hand). Nikon moved this camera slightly more into the pro side of prosumer, only limitation is you wont be able to machine gun 100 raws at 10-FPS but for most uses it is outstanding. The newer D7100 is even better but will be well over budget.

Failing that the D5100 is probably the best value DSLR money can buy for any system. Again D5300 is the replacement and is better but more expensive, and there is a D5200 that is in-between. Don't worry, the D5100 is still a very modern camera with sensor performance up there with the best, http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Niko...5100-vs-Canon-EOS-600D-the-dxomark-comparison
Nikon Iterates these lower end cameras really quickly because that is the core price point for most buyers

I'll echo D.P.'s comments, I recently upgraded from the D200 (which I expect has similar sensor tech to the D2X) to a D7000. I shoot a lot of gigs, the low light performance is lightyears ahead of the D200.

Bare in mind if you have AFD lenses these will not auto focus on the D5300/D5100 or any other entry level models. This article goes into detail.

Awesome. Thanks guys, I think you've confirmed what I was thinking. Had a look in the shops today and the 7000 is a lovely bit of kit. The 5000 range are just too small and entry level. So just got to get mine sold and get my hands on a 7000

D7000 is definitely the best bet for features, size and handling. The other cameras are much more consumer but offer the same kind of image quality.
