Right i've decided i want a new fan/cooler for my x850xt as the noise from the stock one is driving me nuts. I've played around with different settings for it on Ati Tray and cant come up with anything that doesnt annoy me enough to stop using headphones and start using my speakers again while gaming whilst at the same time keeping the card cool.
I've had a look at the ones on OCuK but they all say silent or quiet yet i know some will be louder than others or better so i'm slightly confused as to which one to get :p
Can anyone suggest a quiet efficient replacement cooler for this card for the sake of my sanity :p I'm not wanting watercooling as i just dont trust water around the pc. Any suggestions made could you also let me know how easily it would be to fit.

Cheers,
Zeph.

It makes me laugh that some people say the stock x850xt cooler is quiet lol, m8 mine drove me up the wall. Check the zalman 700 range, i use the all copper one and run it at 5volts with = temps to the stock cooler, tis whisper quiet :)

The Arctic cooler is VERY VERY nice - works great :) - and yes it's quiet.

Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATI 5 (X850 Series) VGA Silencer (HS-018-AR)

I asked this question when looking into changing mine before I managed to find a quiet config with the stock fan using atitray tools(going from other posts around I must be about the only one :D :D ) and everyone recommened the Zalmans over the arctic coolers for both reliability and performance.

Huh?

what you on about, the stock cooler I have on my X850XT is totally quiet?

When I boot the PC up it screams like a proper howler then settles down to silence.

well that mainly cos arctic cooling messed up with the first load. but there fine now, and easier to fit imo.

VEry easy, very quick to fit, excellent cooling too (I'd say better than the Zalmon for one very simple reason - it pushes the warm air out of the back, correct me if I'm wrong but the Zal doesn't use an external warm air extractor? )

yeah thats what I like about the stock ATI heatsink, seems to be a good design, and also looks like they have used the same HSF on the X1800 and X1900 series.

I wonder if some of you have a bad batch, or maybe your systems are toasty making the cards heat up beyond the norms?

My card is quiet honest, even after a good gaming session?

The card is only a few weeks old and much much louder than any card i've had before, granted the best i had before thatwas a 6600LE  Even when not playing games it is significantly loud. At one point i took it out and ran the monitor through the on board graphics just to test and the PC was almost silent and thats including the Opteron heatsink which i am pretty pleased with for noise and cooling considering its the one that came with the CPU.

So time to pick between the arctic and the zalman... decisions decisions :)

When i got my X850XTPE the first thing i did was put an Arctic Cooling Rev.2 ATI 5 (X850 Series) VGA Silencer (HS-018-AR) on it. Quiet as a mouse tippy-toeing through a church full of praying nuns. The stock cooler at stock clocks used to be in the high 30c, the Silencer at my overclock 580/601 is at 31c. The rev.2 ATI 5 also has a large area covering the ram at the back, so helping the ram cooling.

One quick note on the Arctic coolers, if your card is made by Asus then the power sockets don't match up. All other makes are fine but you never stated what make yours is.
What speed you got your fan running at stock?? Can't understand how some are loud as fcuk and some, like mine :D , are quiet

I had an Artic Cooler on my old recently upgraded x850XTPE. Awsome cooler and cheap too.Vents hot case air to atmosphere. Zalmon looks better though.
I need to get rid of both at some point.

Arghhh mine is an Asus X850XT so your saying the afore mentioned Arctic cooler wont fit? Nooo :(

the cooler itself will fit but the wiring plugs aren't the same. You could cut both the new and old plugs off and swap them around but there goes your warrenty.
Whats wrong with the stock Asus cooler on your card?? mine runs fine now I had a play in ati tray tools and changed the fan speeds and temp settings. If you want to change it go for the Zalman.

You know what they say "one man's silence Is another man's noise" ;)

The design of the fan simply cannot shift a sufficient amount of air in silence.

At 100% duty cycle the stock fan is far from quiet! you said it yourself.
if you dont run ati tray tool to over-ride the fan speed you gfx fan will never even run half speed because the threshold is set to high in the bios.
I use ati tray tool so it kicks the fan into max when the gfx core runs as low 35c, these ati gfx cores love low temps so it allowed me to overclock my card more, the stock cooler was simply to loud and efficient at cooling.

Mine is a Powercolor card. The fan now runs at 50% (Ati Tray) from 60C up to 90C where i have it set to 100% which is keeping the card at around 67C while gaming. Before i used Ati Tray and was just using CCC the fan noise was very loud anyway.
Perhaps different people have different tolerances of noise level, but my tower sits In front and to the left of me at head level. Not ideal i know but thats how it has to be.

yes it will fit, its only the power socket on the Asus cards that causes the problem as for some reason Asus use different connectors than everyone else!
Heskey the stock fan is noisey as hell at 100% but never needs to go anywhere near that fast. my card idles at 33'c with the fan spinning at 15% and when gaming the most the temp will hit is 62'c and thats with the fan spinning at 65% which, ok you can hear, but if your gaming then the sound from my 5.1 easily covers that up even when its not cranked right up.

Yours idles at 33C on the stock fan? With my fan at 18% right now and i'm only using firefox to view this site mine is idling at 45C!
