Misses has been using my older Pixel 6 Pro and has really enjoyed it.

However last night it took the inevitable tumble and now has a smashed screen. Its now time to replace it. It was overdue a bit as shes often fighting with the storage space (128gb)

What would be a good upgrade that wont break the bank. She uses it for photos and the usual apps - nothing too intensive, but loves to keep open hundreds of chrome tabs... (dont ask)

I've just gone ahead with the motorola edge 60 fusion for £299.

I'll trade in my old Galaxy A54 so it should mean the change has cost just ~£150. Gone are the days needing me to spend a lot of money on a phone. Spec wise it seems more than fine. 256GB internal storage (only UFS2.2) and it can also take a microSD still. 5200mAh battery with 68w charging. A nice 6.67" screen with a decent 446ppi and 120Hz refresh rate. They have also worked with Pantone for the pictures/camera. BT5.4 and WiFi6 and 5G supported. Dual SIM and I believe SIM2 can be eSIM also. IP69/68 rated.

I switched my pixel 6 pro for a pixel 8a, and I'm quite happy with it. It doesn't have quite the same camera capabilities as the 6 pro but it's still more than enough for what I use it for. 256GB of RAM as well.

I think thats a bit too much of a sidestep / backstep for her to be honest. Would rather get a second hand identical replacement then take a hit on the camera spec etc. also the slower charging is a big no no.

Thats not a bad shout, think she has some JL vouchers too from work!

Is that much if a step up from the 6 Pro? Ive been so out of the loop for a long time for phones.
6 Pro used Google's first gen Tensor chip which wasn't really that efficient. It also had a poor modem which I found fine in the UK, but a battery drainer and weaker reception when on holiday in certain countries. 8 comes with 3rd gen Tensor which is a lot better and the modem is also improved. Still lags behind the Snapdragon competitors, but it's a good step up from the 6 Pro.

You lose the telephoto lens but the main and wide camera should be better on the 8.

You're also dropping down from 12gb RAM to 8gb, but I've no idea how that will affect Chrome if it has hundreds of tabs open, I always keep my browser tabs count minimal.

Charging is a slight improvement from 23W to 27W. However, from my experience with the 6 Pro it hardly went up to 23W, especially after 50%, seems to be limited due to thermals. 8 does better thermal wise so should charge faster overall.

Then there's the 7 year support on the 8 vs the 5 year support... assuming she doesn't drop and smash the screen on this too :p.

Thanks mate thats honestly genuinely all really helpful.

I think the only kicker is the 8GB of RAM vs the original 12GB in the 6 Pro. I cant change her approach to tab management, ive tried its a losing battle.

The other option is to look at just getting another 6 Pro, Amazon still sell them surprisingly... but she struggles with lack of storage on the 6 Pro as it is.

I did a bit more looking around and seems Chrome will sleep/archive older tabs, so it could already be doing that for her 6 Pro. So I guess it should be fine for the 8. Seems to be smarter management compared to the desktop version.

Interesting. Well if thats the case then it shouldnt be too much of an issue, Ill try take a look tonight and see what her memeory use is like on the current device, there must be a way to check. Then if its under 8GB then i guess the 8 is a reasonable option.

I had also been looking at a Poco F7 Pro - can be had in 512GB storage for around £300 ish on deals. I used to have an older Poco Pro and it was great for its price. But not sure how she would like it after being on stock android for so long now.

Ive not been able to get back into the MM either as im sure there might be a few second hand bargains in there too!

You can check RAM usage by going Settings -> System -> Developer options -> Running Services. If you don't have the developer options setting you can enable it by going Settings -> About phone and tapping the build number at the bottom 10 times.

The dev options are enabled from when i had it as my main phone.

Ill take a look tonight and see - Thanks mate, genuinely really helpful
