Hi

My system died and it appears that you cant get new motherboards that are socket 478 and AGP now.

What is the cheapest way I can build a replacement system, I want it to be at least as quick as my old one.

The old spec was

case 350w power supply

p4 3.4
6800gt agp(overclocked to ultra)
2X 1gig geil pc3200 ddr 400

I dont need anything else becuase I can use the old hard drive/dvd drives etc.

ANy ideas?

You'll struggle, I had a Socket 939/DDR/AGP board fail and I had to settle for new board that hasn't got AGP, it's got onboard graphics which will tide me over.

I'd either be looking for a second hand mobo (if you get lucky yo might find the same type which will make replacing easier) or buying new RAM, Graphics and CPU.

i had ddr400/939 that broke on me, thankfully its pci-e though, so its a little easier finding 1, theres only 1 thats still selling in shops. so AGP your looking about 30quid on the bay, wont be able to find a brand new one. as i dont think there are any.

good luck

? what is:confused:, be better if you said what is instead of just that

if you mean the motherboard you should learn to read because.

Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard

He had an AGP system, its time to go PCI-Express! so PCI-Express.

The motherboard does not matter if he is after similar performance.

thats pretty impossible to be honest, cant get everything for £200, if you got that motherboard from that link.

but definatly the motherboard, and cpu as then you can upgrade as you wish with them.

and use your ddr400 ram, thats all i can say, and thats still over budget

I would get the asrock motherboard and an e2180. Maybe later down the line upgrade the video card, but you'll notice a MASSIVE difference with the asrock motherboard and an e2180. The e2180 is easy to overclock, and overclocking is very straightforward with that motherboard. I could help you out if need be. I have the e2160 on that same motherboard and have more than a 50% overclock, and i've never overclocked before!

so I think I might as well take the plunge and get a new graphics card as well.

So what should I buy to give a performance of at least my old system , lets say a budget of £350?

I assume I will need motherboards, graphics card, cpu, memory ( or could I use my 2 gig of ddr400?), and would I need a new power supply mine is rated at 350watts peak.

thanks for the help

first - 'What is the cheapest way I can build a replacement system'

then - 'Say I can spend around the £200 mark'

then - 'lets say a budget of £350?'

Come on peeps.......keep suggesting stuff. We'll have him watercooling an sli and quad core system before the days out!! :D

The following will pwn your old system (have recently done nearly this exact upgrade, except I'm successfully using my old ATX 2.0 power supply still and I got the HIS card instead, I used the powercolor here as its on "This week only" thus even cheaper...)

While results are never guaranteed, I've successfully booted into Windows at 3.5Ghz, and have had a reasonably stable Windows desktop at 3.2Ghz (320 * 10) though not 100% prime stable yet, using stock cooling (probably need to get better cooling as the temps are a little toasty using the stock cooler, might also need a better quality PSU.) This rig seems to be able to clock way further, but as I say, it needs better cooling than I've currently got. Anyway, 3DMark06 score of just over 10,000 while overclocked to 3.2Ghz, about 7800/8000 or so stock (can't remember exactly offhand). In practice, even at stock (2Ghz CPU, 800Mhz RAM) this thing is dead fast, and runs everything I play a great deal more easily (mostly at max settings on 1680x1050) than my old 9800XT + A64 3200+ ever did. Best cheap upgrade I've ever done. I can run a few benchies if you want.

Things to consider: The HX620 PSU is *very* nice/better option, but a lot more expensive. The 8800GT would be a better (but somewhat out of proportion [87%] more expensive) graphics card. Currently the best cheapie bang-for-buck must be the 3850, but if your budget stretches to the 8800GT, that's the better card. The IP35 Pro board is an even better board, and has extra features/ports etc. but is more expensive than the straight IP35.

if you're old system did everything you needed it too do, then the asrock mobo/2180 and you're current card will do you fine.

Any recent graphics card will need more than a 350w PSU, so you'll need to upgrade that. If you aren't going to get that ASRock board then you'll need new CPU, GFX, and memory (since DDR1 isn't compatible with DDR2).

How about something like this:
