Hi,

I currently have a Dell E228WFP as my primary monitor. The image is a bit washed out - much worse than my older secondary Samsung 930BF - and I'd like a larger screen with a higher res. I'm thinking 24" and 1920x1200 would be ideal (I do not want 1080p). I do mainly productivity stuff with some gaming. Ideally don't want tons of badly dithered colours and blurry streaks like on the E228WFP!

I've had a look around and the Dell U2412M seems a decent buy; 1000:1 contrast, 300 cd/m2 and 8ms g2g.

I've also seen that the new Samsung SA850 is coming in 24" form 'soon'. Are there any other monitors I am missing out here that are good buys?

Annoyingly, I'm not sure whether I mind which panel type I have. The Samsung is supposedly 4ms, the quickest of my screens, but also has the better colour reproduction and contrast, so I'm well aware that within screen types there's a wealth of diversity.

Any thoughts?

I've never been impressed by any Dell display I've ever used (Aside from the old Trinitron CRTs in days of old). Crap colours and washed out like you described. I would look at IIyama or Viewsonic.

Edit: Mondeo

I have absolutely no idea what models they are, but all our displays at work are Dell. I have 4 of the 24" jobbies on some crazy matrix esq stands and I find the quality to be pretty decent. I sometimes find with other displays that my eyes feel ... fuzzy... after using them for a while.

Of course, if money is no object, I absolutely love the apple displays, unsure if any come in the size your after though.

We have plenty of the E228's at work and they really are an entry level monitor. Think they are TN based and thus a little washed out.

Be warned of the ST2410 and successors because they are LED backlit and for some reason have a bit of a blue hue to them.

You are good to go with any U series Dell although our CTO had the 1st Gen ones (U2411 A00/A01) and we've had to send it back at least 3 times now.

Great screens though.

Hmm does look nice. 1200p, S-IPS, 400 cd/m2, 1000:1 contrast and 5ms. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Its lush! :) I paid £340 for mine originally, I think they are £280ish now?

EDIT: I bought one as I wanted a decent screen for photography work. I don't regret it! The colours and sharpness are incredible :)

Yeah they are going quite cheap in various places. What's the response time like? Are you at home today?

Monitors are such a pita tbh. I am glad other people think the E228WP is washed out, as it means anything new will be better. To be fair I got it for £100 brand new from Dell about 3 years ago, so I can't really complain!

I am impetuous and as such I must order a new monitor for delivery tomorrow.

I am reading the reviews for the Dell and the HP and they both seem really good :(

I am most tempted by the Dell because it's brand-new tech, but as you seem to like the HP so much I figure it's a safer bet. Grr!

OK so I ordered the Dell. It will arrive tomorrow and I can set it up and see if I like it. I can also arrange to come and see the HP within the next few days and if I prefer it, the Dell can be DSRd.

Best of ALLLL worlds!
