Replacement for GTX-295

Hello all,

I have an old (11 years) PC. In a previous life it was my gaming PC, now it's my work PC. Generally, it's fine and running W10 Pro.

Salient information:
Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Intel X58 Chipset
CPU: i7 950 @ 3.06GHz 8 MB cache LGA1366
GPU: GTX295 1792MB 16X PCI Express (2 DVI Port, No HDMI Version)

I have two monitors, but want to increase that to three, and I'm not sure how to go about that.

The two existing monitors are both DVI connected, the third monitor I want to add is HDMI only. The configuration of the three monitors I would like is (left to right) 24" DVI | 32" HDMI | 24" DVI.

Is there a reasonably inexpensive GPU I can place in this Mobo that will achieve that?

Thanks

You can also get a Xeon Processor in you board for a bit more future proofing. They cost not more than £20. If you want to keep your system a whilst longer and need some more processing power, it’s very good value for money.

Any GPU you buy at this point and you will be massively bottlenecked by your CPU. I think it's time for a whole new system my friend.

He hasn't said anything about gaming etc, just wanting an inexpensive GPU that can run three screens. Plus a first gen i7 isn't completely useless...

Something like a GT 610/20/30 or 700 equivalent. That'd fine for just displaying to two or three screens.

Indeed, just struggling to find one with the right combination of connectors at the moment hence my question above.

It would also be useful to know what applications the OP will be using, because an ultra low end GPU might not cut it.

@digyerownhole - Would be useful to know what applications you use; are we talking just desktop publishing and web-based apps, or something more intensive?

Just a thought, recommend the card you had in mind with the correct number of connectors and a displayport/whatever to hdmi adapter?

As for the previous tete a tete, leave it

I don't know what applications the OP uses yet. I don't want to recommend a GT610 or something if he does anything GPU accelerated. Even an old GTX295 will stomp something like that into the weeds if he needs to use its processing power.

But there are a few GT710s with a DVI-D, an HDMI and a VGA for £35~ out there if that would fit the bill.

I'll guess it's been dragged kicking and screaming into a WFH machine, if so, like me the OP needs a third monitor for pornhub

So give recommendations based on that, if needs be augment your selection if the needs are greater ;)

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I no longer game on it (I have kids and a console for that now). Although I do spin up HL2 every now and then. It absolutely is a WFH machine and has been for sometime (b4 CV19); no stresses in terms of GPU processing. I run Office365, MSTSC connections to remote servers, and MS Teams. The i7 is still coping with my Excel Workbooks, some of which are > 100mb in size.

So, really, yeah it's just a case of swapping this 295 out for something that take those three monitors. I did read that some cards which have 2 DVIs + 1 HDMI disable the DVIs if the HDMI is connected (an either or situation), so I want to avoid that. I also don't want the HDMI connection to drive the sound.

Quite happy to have a card with three DVIs and use an adapter to connect the 3rd HDMI monitor.

Edit: I'd like to retain 1920x1080 on all three monitors.

I believe a lot of gtx 700 series cards sported two dvi outputs and a single HDMI.

Something like a gtx 750 could provide a cheap low power solution.

I have almost the same setup for my old office PC, I use 2 x gt210's to hook up 3 monitors. 1 dvi, one hdmi and 1 VGA. I Have an x58 p6t deluxe, 24gb ram and x5670 Xeon oc'd to 4GHz, still pretty good multi thread performance for a sub 20 quid chip.

IIRC the older nvidia cards (pre 9 or 10 series I believe) don't support 3 monitors from a single card even if they have 3 outputs available. So it'll be 2 old cheap cards or 1 relatively expensive newer card. Maybe 1050 or 1050ti, maybe 1030 or 950 etc.... Can't recall if 750/ti would work would have to check that they support 3 monitors. Pretty sure anything earlier than those wouldn't support 3 monitors from a single card.

Edit

Cex sell gt 210 for 6 quid each.

I'm not sure. The older cards often have 2 dvi ports but they won't output from both at the same time. I think they are 1 single link dvi and 1 dual link dvi so will only output from one or the other. You could try it out though.

Seeing mostly people saying the 750 ti will work with 3 displays, official nvidia spec shows it supports 4 screens. However some are saying it doesn't...

I had three screens hooked up to my GTX660 once upon a time. So that works too. I had an MSI one.

You had to use 2x DVI and 1x DP on it.

Is it within the rules to post a link to a Facebook Marketplace sale item? I found a Gtx 770 2gb windforce for £50 and wanna know if it's suitable.

I don't think so technically, but you could put the pictures here. :)

A GTX770 can support three monitors though. It if has two DVI's and a displayport, you should be good to go.

What connections do your screens have? I'm not 100% certain if you can use two DVI and one HDMI, but I know two DVI and one displayport will work.
