Hi all,

After replacing my CPU I am now looking at possibly replacing my GPU.

What would be a decent upgrade from the 680 GTX?

Current specs are 8GB RAM (may upgrade if required)
Intel 4790K
1080 montior
850W PSU just incase this becomes a factor with latest cards

Upgrade path needs to be single card only, no SLI option :(

I dont really want to spend more than about £250-£300 but the TI cards are always options if they offer best value.

What is everyones suggestions?

How much of a performance boost is there from a 970 to a 980?

And thanks for the suggestions so far :)

Doesn't need to be Nvidia btw, just traditionally used for a long time now. Used ATI previously.

Well I've gone with an overclocked 980 ti to replace SLI 970s, and for me, that was worth it. SLI isn't as great an option as it may appear, most games still have some issues at launch and you could be waiting weeks until they're resolved.

For 1080p gaming, a 970 is very good, but if you're hoping for max details @ 60FPS with the most current releases, you'll be a touch disappointed. A 980 would be enough to ensure that level of fluidity for most games, but the 980 Ti is actually a very worthy option. The third party options are excellent, they can often equal SLI 970s in performance, which leaves you room to breathe if you ever need to jump up in resolution or games become much more demanding. Of particular interest though is the 6GB VRAM, which will become more of an asset as PC games begin to move beyond console levels of detail. We're already seeing some games eat up 4GB+, so I would personally be wary of buying a new GPU that may have difficulty running new releases 1 year from now.

And if Nvidia features are not a concern and future proofing is, I can't help but mention the Fury X. DX12 performance that bests Nvidia at every turn and at a price that's closer to the 980 for more performance.

from what I've heard the 680 is quite a competant card compared to the 700 series, so you are probably looking at something like a 780Ti or 980 ( similar to each other ), 980s were the flagship as of around 10 monthes ago but they are now falling in price, they are quite decent cards, comparable to an overclocked 780Ti but apparently has some better optimizations and lower power usage.

290X isnt worth considering, 390X or Fury pro maybe.
