replacement graphics card?

i don't know whether i need to replace my graphics card. after 2 hours of gaming, my nvidia geforce 8800gtx just stops. i get a windows message saying "Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX has stopped working". all windows aero turns to windows basic for a few seconds, and then the card "kicks in" again and everything appears to be fine.

If i were to get a new graphics card (in price range of £250) what would be the best bet?

Just what i was thinking

so what's the actual difference between nvidia and AMD then, because you seem to be able to get more bang for your buck if you buy AMD. is nvidia just more expensive because of hype, or is there a real reason?
