Replacement locks

I'd also just double check your house insurance too with regards to thumb turn. They apparently weren't approved of in ours so had to change them.

Really? I'm going to look into that as our doors have them based on the fact I'd rather not be looking for keys should we have a fire or other disaster. I'd far rather be able to get out quickly.

I have the ABS anti snap locks and recommend them. I don't have thumb turns but I do keep a spare key on the curtain hook at my patio doors in case of swift exit is needed.

Word is though you can just buy an ABS tool online though :(

Buying a tool and being able to use it are two entirely different things though.

Anyone can buy a lump of clay but not everyone can create a piece of art ;-)

Burglars who want to break in want to be in fast, not spend 10 minutes picking a lock.

Even lock smiths hardly ever pick locks these days. Phone one up to say you are locked out and all they will do is drill the lock 99% of the time.

There are tools you can buy online to pick every lock out there. I find it hard to believe that the ABS are less secure than cheap cylinder locks and it'll take more than a single forum post to convince me. I'll have to look into it later as I fit these for customers all the time.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance I have little clue about locks but it appears there is a kit that makes pretty short work of ABS (dimple. Is that standard?) locks;

Have seen a couple of these tools for sale ~£60.

Well that looked easy, but how do they compare to other locks? As in are all locks this easy to get passed and if so what's the best option

Honestly I have no idea sorry. I use these locks on my house. They're verified by my insurance company so if they do get broken through then I'm covered.

Reading online seems to indicate they're one of it not the best in the euro cylinder class but that could just be good marketing. I'm not knowledgable enough. I figure if someone wants to get in a lock wont stop them they'll just break a window. As such anything really valuable is in a safe. Everything else can be covered by insurance.

I honestly dont know why everyone worrys about expensive locks etc

If i were a crim and wanted to get into your house the last thing id be doing is standing there picking a lock.

As long as they are approved by your insurance company and work properly they are fine regardless of brand etc

Then it shows that you dont know anything about it.

They dont pick anything, they snap it, and it takes 10 seconds. And why wouldnt you take steps to do your best to make your home less appealing to a criminal? Because you have nothing of value, nothing irreplacable, or nothing sentimental? Well, the rest of us might.

Because it would take me one second to smash ur window. And who the hell is gonna stand there admiring your nice expensive locks, a crim would walk past or see you out with someting they wanted and smash ur window and be gone

A smashed window makes a lot more noise and more precarious to get through.

Eurocylinders can take less than 10 seconds.

Probably best not to actually explain it! - OcUK Mods.

What you have to keep in mind is that no lock is 100% secure. Most thieves pop out with the basic tools, hammer, screwdriver and a metal bar which puts eurocylinders at risk. Buying a £60 kit then standing there trying to figure out which set up is going to work is going to take a lot longer and be more obvious and it is less likely the criminal will have that equipment.

I'm fairly certain you're trolling and fair enough. But just in case anyone naive is reading this and thinks you have a credible point, I'm gonna retort.

The long and short of it is, no one is going to admire my expensive locks. They're going to look at my locks and decide wether it's worth spending 20 minutes trying to get in, or if they'd rather go next door to your house that you obviously don't care about and be in and out before you even realise youve failed to protect your family in even the most basic, uninvolved way.

Go talk to some victims of burglary. Maybe it's still cool to be blasé and you're a teenager or student, but there is nothing blasé about having your home violated.

I agree with him though.

My next door neighbour fitted uprated locks and sash jammers to his conservatory doors. Burglars just put a brick through the glass and carried away his TV and PS4 - I didn't hear a thing nor did he.

If your stuff can fit though any of your windows once smashed, expensive locks etc are a waste of time.

One example doesn't make the endeavour pointless. I don't have a conservatory so they'd have a job putting a brick through it. I live in a townhouse with a small window by the front door that couldn't fit anything of value through, but I'm not using it as an example as to why locks would change everything.

I already said that no locks will make your home invincible. It's about making it more hassle than it's worth.

I have laminated windows, so no it wouldn't, enjoy looking at my expensive locks :p

Having come to the conclusion that fitting what I thought might be good locks (as a joiner) and the burglar making even more of a mess of my door I've backed it up with a Texecom alarm system which as someone says above if they want to get in they will but at least I will know about it.
