My son's gaming machine has died, needs replacement motherboard and CPU. Currently ASUS SLI motherboard with Q6600 CPU (2.4ghz) and 4 gb of RAM (think it is DDR2) in 4 strips.

Will need motherboard that can take two geforce 9600gs graphics cards.

Please can you recommend ? Thanks

Do you have a budget and plan on re-using the DDR2 memory.

Edit: Can you not re-use your Q6600

CPU got overclocked, burnt out - thanks for the spec... was wondering if Windows would need to be reinstalled if we move from an Intel Processor to an AMD based system? Thanks..

Windows shouldnt need to be reinstalled. Will definitely need a reactivation though.

I generally do a full reinstall in these sorts of situations anyway..

Hi guys, if I went for a DDR3 system would you please spec me up a relevant CPU and Memory as I am interested in going for the Gigabyte ex58-ud5 motherboard, and a reasonably future proof set up... Thanks for the specs so far... I'm just assessing my options at the moment.

and they are entitled to free shipping too i belive, so win win there, although not in their £400 budget

The GA-EX58-UD5 (socket 1366) will limit you to a i7 9xx build at the mo - hence the higher cost

Something like this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-206-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

will allow you to use i7 8xx, i5 7xx or i5 6xx (socket 1156) with your ddr3 RAM of choice. All good gaming rigs at a lower cost.

At the end of the day - future proof does not exist - just the depth of your pockets and the length of your arms!!!

You did ask for cheap as poss

Shame the Q6600 was fried!!

Ok guys thanks for the specs. I think I am ready to go ahead and order the following:

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10600C9 (1333MHz) Tri-Channel (CMX6GX3M3A1333C9) £132.99

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.5GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail £129.99

Asus P5E3 Pro Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard

2 Questions : are these compatible with eachother and also will the mobo take 2 9600gs gfx cards?

Thanks..

The motherboard can only use crossfire, but some people have managed to get SLI working through reg changes ect, not tried it myself, a search around the internet should help.

The memory will work but ideally you need dual channel and not triple channel.

The board does support the cpu.
