I built a general use/ gaming PC for a friend 10 years ago which died over the weekend, it's looking like CPU or the motherboard.

Given the age of components I've suggested a new/ refreshed build and could use a general sanity check.

Current spec is:

H170M Motherboard
Intel core i5-6500
16GB DDR4 2400Mhz
GTX 770
Samsung 750 Evo
Corsair CX600M PSU

Use case is general computing and playing older single player games on 1080p, but he recently tried some newer titles (Wolfenstein, Tomb Raider, SW Jedi Knight etc.) and the machine obviously struggled.

I've offered my old 5600X & 32GB DDR4 for £100 to help with a budget AM4 build, but sounds like he's keen on going newer/ more future proof (even with the current RAM prices).

Budget is ~£800 and will be re-using my old RTX 3070 and 512GB 980 Pro NVME to save some money elsewhere, so was looking at the below:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £823.90 (includes delivery: £7.99)

Have I gone massively overboard here given the intended use case? Guessing I could probably go for a cheaper (B650?) motherboard and possibly a Chinese 7500F? I'm a bit out of the loop here really.

Personally think he'd be fine with my old AM4 parts, but it's his money ultimately :p

Shuffled some components around:

- The 7500X3D is a better gaming CPU.
- Cheaper just as capable RAM and HSF.
- Cheaper motherboard that will be ample for the CPU and any future gaming orientated upgrades.
- Higher wattage PSU, the MSI A850G is very well reviewed and comes with an A rating on the SPL tier list.

£100 for those parts is a really good deal with RAM prices as they are and the 5600X is more than good enough to pair with the 3070.

He's being silly here and pouring money down the drain.

Thanks, this looks much better rounded with the X3D chip.

Yes I think so too, meeting up tomorrow to go over things and will make the case for the AM4 route.

Appreciate the help and I'll keep the thread updated :)

I feel that if he was using the 3070 as a stop-gap and intended to upgrade the GPU to something more powerful within 6-12 months the AM5 option would be worth it.

Current prices conflate things a lot, we don't know when or if the cost of DDR5 will come down so long term it's a bit of gamble in regards to buying now or waiting. That said, if he's not changing the GPU anytime soon, going for your very generous AM4 offer is by far the better choice.
