Hi People,

I've not considered a new router in many a year and am totally out of the loop with such things. Could anyone recommend me a new router with the following options:

Compatible with BT Infinity/Infinity 2
AC wireless support
OpenVPN support
Custom firmware support - tomato?

With a router having OpenVPN I assume if I connect to me account on the router it will protect all local devices on my VPN account?

Running OpenVPN on the router requires substantial hardware in comparison to running it on the local machines/devices so in all honesty it isn't really worth it in my opinion.

AS far as recommendations go for the AC wireless there's a few options from ASUS all of which you can run Merlin on but I'd do your research before purchasing anything due to some issues with the kit I've seen on here and on various other forums

Well, its diffcult to say any more without breaking forum rules, I'm with a big ISP and some of the websites I want to access are blocked.

Don't most high end home/small business routers allow you to use a vpn through them? Or are we talking about something different :p

Either way I'm going to be closely watching this thread.

You could build a router based around a low power mini-itx solution, or even spare parts you have laying around.

Look into PFSense. It's open source and gets updated frequently. It also supports OpenVPN.

Downsides are that obviously it will cost more to build. You will need a minimum of two network ports on the hardware to support 1xWAN (From the OpenReach modem) and 1XLAN which will then need to go to a switch (again possibly another purchase).
Also this has no built in wifi, so you would need to consider an access point, although if you already have a router laying around it's usually pretty easy to use that as an access point.

The experience is not for the light-hearted, but if you give it a shot you can learn a lot about networking!

This is true. Buying a dual-core model (AC68U or AC56U) would help tremendously, however the demand you are placing on the router will determine whether a consumer router is the way to go. A little custom pfSense box along with a wireless access point may be the better solution, and wouldn't cost too much more.

The Asus ones are still the best of the bunch all things considered, excellent third-party support, with Merlin being the firmware of choice, but Tomato also being available.

Your provider will give you an Openreach modem, so you'll be fine with a "plain" router without any modems. The one-box route is tidier, but aside from that I don't really see much point.
