For some reason I feel I'm not enjoying my 911 (996) turbo, maybe it's the worry behind how complicated it is and the way it could potentially kick out a huge bill or the ***head image I feel its attracting.

Anyway, in a quest to fuel my thirst for fun but sub 30k cars i've been wondering if it's worth taking a punt on a Corvette of some kind.

I've driven plenty of yank muscle overseas, never here. Have come across a Z06 that is reportedly kicking out 560 bhp.

I haven't driven a vette before, it's a manual. phew - and with 33k on the clock.

Any thoughts on corvettes, has anyone had one or driven one. Or indeed any other alternatives for a 30k budget (FWIW we also have a CLS 55 in the family so i'm not really interested in another AMG merc)

Spend 40K instead and get a 996 GT3, I think I told you this before too. Car is cast iron residual wise so won't cost you much in real terms, is MUCH more involving and in Mk2 guise as quick as a Turbo. Metzger engine will protect you too.

lets have a looksie....

Driven a Z06, the best engine I've ever experienced, power and torque everywhere at any speed and the sound track is just beyond words good, I've had this same temptation too. On a smooth road or track in the dry it would kick a 996 turbos ass to be frank if the driver is half decent. Change the roads to bumpy, narrow then no chance, add a bit of weather then again not so, though the stability systems are excellent and will help tame the rear from spinning out if you give it a little to much loud pedal out of corners.

If you want attention from other petrol heads and general public the Vette will get it, far more so than any Porsche. The Corvette should cost far less to run but don't go in blind there have being some failures and the bills could be big and to drive it feels twice the width of a 911 so be aware of that then factor in LHD too.

At sub 30k great buy, they have now bottomed out and seem to be appreciating now as becoming rarer as people are holding onto them.

gibbo - the one i'm looking at is at vanrooyen in warrington.

30k, reportedly with 560 bhp. Think it must be a 6.0 LS2 as it's a 2005 car

That 'vette at Vanrooyen isn't a Z06 AFAIK, it's a Z51 package C6 with engine mods. So you wouldn't get the lighter frame and other body tweaks that the Z06 has.

Not a Z06, not interested then, if I go Vette it is either the mans version, the Z06 as that engine is just superb and I've driven both.

Or the new Stringray!

interesting..... so youd advise to pass on this one then.

They are great cars but the regular C6 to me just don't do it for me in looks and its just not as much of an event to drive.

The Z06 has minor bodywork/kit changes which make it look far more aggressive and far nicer and that 7.0l, engine, I advise anyone in their lifetime to make sure they get to drive one or passenger in one, it is beyond amazing that engine it really is.

The C6 is a great all round car, don't get me wrong, but its not a Z06. The Z06 is vastly different, engine, body, chassis, suspension, buy the Z06 as you wont loose a penny now, they are so rare.

That is a lot of engine and a cool looking car but damn that interior :(

Its not about the interior though and damn man I've sat in far worse places, you buy a Vette because it is American muscle, if you want an interior, stick with your Audi. ;)
