This is what I had to say about the Z06 after my test drive:-
I got to the Corvette dealer today for around 1:40pm, car was ready, took some pictures and off we went. Car had just over half a tank fuel. It was the same dealer who I test drove a C6 Z51 with last week which I reviewed and even though it was a good car felt it lacked in a few areas in comparison to the Mustang. Onto driving the Z06:-
First thing I noticed is the steering, its still not perfect but its practically as good as the Mustang, but the Z4 M Coupe is still a bit better. However now I find its not something that would annoy me because on the Z06 it seems same weight at all speeds and does not adjust things mid corner which I hated on the C6, there is also some more feel on the Z06 so a big improvement in steering. The clutch took about 10-20 minutes to get used as it bites rather harsh, thankfully I never stalled it, the gearbox unfortunately is not as good as either the Mustang or BMW Coupe but its perfectly acceptable, maybe a short throw adapter would help improve things here, easy mod.
At first I was a little scared to give it loud pedal because this car was scaring me so I took it easy and got onto some dual carriage ways. I left it in 4th because I thought it would not be too harsh and proceeded to floor it, and well I must have been grinning like a Cheshire car because the acceleration was just unreal and the G's it put on you was something else. Remember this was 4th gear and I loved it. So after a few more pulls I tried 3rd, and it was like OMG WOW WOW, then I got the courage together to try 2nd, made sure TC/DSC systems were on and I floored it, OMG I think my pants went brown the acceleration was just mental or the way it goes about it anyway, its an absolute animal the way it accelerates but it puts all that power down with no fuss. Remember this car does 60mph in 1st so its got tall gearing but the way it accelerates you'd think the gearing was short. Accelerate from 40mph in 2nd and it seems like 80mph comes up in about 2s, its just mental. Anyway I was getting a feel for the car, put it in 5th and just cruised for a bit. Jeremy Clarkson says this car is useless on UK roads and is back breaking, does he just make stuff up? This car is perfectly fine on the roads, in fact its rather cosy, the seats are soft but hug you well and the cars suspension absorbs bumps and uneven surfaces very well, it was never crashy it would be a joy to commute in. So we found some country lanes and my god does this thing handle, the grip is endless and when on odd occaison I tried to provoke the rear-end it took a lot to put it out and even when it was about to let go the active handling system kept things in place with remarkable speed, in fact they are so good you just keep your foot in it and make minor correction and the active handling does the rest. You can switch the traction off if you want or just put it into death mode and switch it all off if you dare.
This thing eats corners for breakfast its like its on rails and it must be something to do with those 325 wide rear tyres giving so much grip in the rear. The steering is not as quick as the Mustang or BMW but its very close and feels good. Corners that had uneven surfaces and bumps did upset the rear-end but only ever so slightly and nothing thats not easily corrected by the driver or active handling systems so it was indeed quite good and getting power down mid corner is easily done.
The interior is functional and looks good, not as good as the BMW plus it also feels a lot cheaper but the interior has little input to my car choice its just a bonus if its good and yes the BMW is stunning but the Corvette is a nice place to be and the heads up display is excellent.
The car was a sheer joy to drive, its so stable and at higher speeds is a lot more stable than the C6 version and my Mustang, I feel you could comfortably cruise in the Z06 at speeds as high of 180mph if you dared because in my test drive it displayed fantastic stability, not they I was driving at 180mph though of course.
The sound well that was rather nice, still not in the same league as the Mustang but an exhaust setup soon cures this whilst adding a whole load more power too.
If I go Corvette I was all for a black one, never really considered a dare I say it, yellow one because in pictures black always looks so ace. However after seeing yellow in the flesh and driving this beast around I've changed my mind because I think I want a yellow one now. The Mustang gets a lot of attention but mainly from petrolheads. The Corvette was making peoples jaws hit the floor as we passed, its gotta be the yellow or something. People were pulling up next to us at traffic lights grinning like a cheshire cat and going wow thats beutiful, both men and women the attention and positive attention at that this car got was quite amazing, I felt like I was on cloud 9.
Anyway the half tank petrol I had in the car was running low and the guy from the dealer looked at me and said "your enjoying this aint you, want me to put more petrol in for you" well of course I said yes. Another £20 he threw in and off we went. What a great guy, he was like its quiet at work and unlike other customers your driving is sensible and under control so he was happy to be driven around in the glorious weather in an equally amazing car. So more country lanes were eaten up, then some serious acceleration on and off local carriage ways and nearly 2 hours later we returned to the dealer both grinning like mad.
Also the brakes on the Z06 were much better than those in the C6 plus the ABS never kicked in on the Z06 either and the car certainly stopped well. But one would hope so as the brakes are huge with 6 piston front calipers and considering the car only weighs 1400kg too it stops easily and under control.
He said so would you consider yellow and I was like yes. He gave me some details and said when your ready to buy let me know and we shall sort you a deal. Whats even better news is today on my way home I met one of my old school friends when fuelling up. We got chatting and he was telling me he now works for Stratstones and said if I want a Z06 to call him and he will sort an additional discount. I'd already got the dealer down to 52k for this example with brand new tyres and a service thrown in if I was to go for it, so any further discount will be a huge bonus.
So could the Corvette replace the Mustang, well I am sorry to say it but yes it could, it had more power, it handled better and it had loads more toys. Plus I felt like some famous person driving around in it and a car has never made me feel like that, it was simply amazing. There are only two issues with the car and thats the steering could still be better and its a lot of money but in all fairness they don't depreciate too much because there is so few about. The ex press Z06 sold a week ago for £50,000 and this was a thrashed and abuse one by the press yet it still fetched 50k, so if I can get a newer one for the same money I'll be getting a good deal and limiting money I would loose in depreciation.
I have a test drive booked in an EVO FQ360, will hopefully be driving a Porsche GT3 soon and a Turbo as well. Then once I've made my decision I can put full focus onto selling the Mustang and go purchase my next vehicle.
Oh and I have looked into modifing the Corvette and about £2000 brings power upto 575 horses not that it needs it and the leaf springs can be changed for coil overs if so desired. Plus it might be possible to mod the steering to transmit more noise into the cabin for better feel I imagine as well.
