Replacing a family PC with a Mac Mini?

you could make an ITX rig with a single slot graphics card, in a tiny case that would have better capabilities graphics wise.

But:

Would cost more to get a decent chassis and fill it with equivalent bits.
It wouldn't be running OSX.....

Is the right answer!

This is what I'm looking at.

No need to order a MDP to DVI adapter unless you want to connect two displays to it - it comes with a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter in the box :)

So why use Parallels when Bootcamp would give better results?

If it's only the "family" computer then it wouldn't matter so much..

Yeah, I've already decided that! I will bootcamp to either XP or Windows 7. The cheque has cleared and I just need to get the cash transferred into the appropriate account and I'll be ordering. This seems to be dragggggggiiiiinnnnngggg on.

I know what you mean.

I wanted to modify a Mac Pro order (add a second superdrive) but they couldn't change the order, so I had to cancel.. wait for the refund and re-order.. felt like an eternity :(

I pretty much got the same spec, except I opted for the 2.66GHz over the 2.53GHz.

You won't be disappointed. It's a capable little rig considering..

I recently bought a Mini but as a replacement for a blown-up NAS server to use with my desktop / laptop macs. It is very quiet and power efficient, and will make a great home theater system for video/audio as well as file serving. It's on 24x7. However I don't think it will have the necesary 3D GPU, CPU or drive speed for a gaming environment (although I haven't tried to be fair).
And nope doesn't come with either a keyboard, mouse (or monitor for that matter).

It's a massive improvement over what it's replacing in all ways. It won't be used for any 'modern' games so I'm happy with the decision. Now that I've paid for it though, I just want it!

Moses - I don't think that's likely. The 3 day estimated shipping is because it's a custom order and they always overestimate the delivery time.

Mac Mini's not due an update, it's just had one. I will eat my hat if it gets anything more than a speed bump at the end of the month, and if it even gets that I will eat one of my socks.

imho the Mac Mini belongs either under a TV or as a 'taster' machine for OSX, but if you've got a reasonable screen and mouse, the Mini and an Apple keyboard is well worth the money. Just personally I'd be more tempted to ebay the screen and buy an iMac, considering you get a good bit more drive space and CPU speed for the money.

But then, for most people's needs, it won't get noticed - so it does make sense what you're doing. Your wife and little girl don't even know what a gigahertz is and they won't miss a fraction of one :D

I ran a Mac Mini as my only machine for a good few months and it was absolutely cracking and led to the dismemberment and sale of £1300+ worth of Windows kit, so they will always have a special place in my heart as the thing that finally won me over to using Mac OS at home - previously I'd used it (extensively) at work on 10.2 and considered it amazing for my work but didn't want it at home. A Mini bought to swot up on Tiger for a new job unexpectedly won me over and made me fall in love with Mac OS for home use as well as work. The rest is history and since then I've been literally a career Mac user. I've not had a non-mac-related job since, and tbh I doubt I will.
