Okay so I'm pretty underwhelmed by the sky Q router so I've ordered a Netgear D7000 with hopes of replacing the Q router, I can find lots of guides and info on replacing the sr102 fibre router but nothing about the Q variant, is it possible and if so what's the procedure?

I should add I don't use the mesh that the Q router plays a part of.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can help me out, thanks.

Fist off you need to extract the user details from the Sky Hub.. not sure if you can do it with the new Q hub as I already had a D7000 set-up when i had Q installed.

FYI i actually went back to the Q hub as it gave better sync speeds than the netgear.. i just bought a wireless AP (ubinit thing) for the wireless side and let the Q hub handle the internet.. from the hub i used one Ethernet for the Sky q box and one going into an 8 port switch.

Thank you for the reply mate. I wouldn't mind if the sync speed was less with the nighthawk we are on an 80/20 line and don't require so much speed it's mainly the dreadful WiFi performance of the Q hub and how badly it deals with my local gamestream setup. I didn't want to create a double NAT which I would get if i piggy backed into the qhub?

Reading around it looks like you no longer need you're username and password for fibre anymore anything in the right format will do the job. I could always give the nighthawk the same Mac address as the Q hub as well.

The nighthawk arrives tomorrow so I will have a play around then.

it was pretty easy to set-up once i had the username and password and spoofed the MAC address (not sure thats needed anymore)

It had its own in built walk threw where you choose the ISP and put in the details and let it test the connection. Sky is one of the ISP's in the list.

Setup was a breeze, just picked sky and put in a random username/password in the option 61 box I also decided to puse the mac address of the q hub just incase it helps (it wont hurt) synced up at 79999/20000 which is the same as the q hub but im getting far better wifi and gamestream performance.

Nice one :)

hey, just reading your post, please can you help me...

I am after the user name and password for the sky q router.
I believe I have found the user name which is the mac address followed by "@skydsl". Please confirm if this is correct...

I have used a few extractor programs but the passwords generated seem to be incorrect and different from each extractor.

I have a netgear x10 router and seperate modem which i had before recently switching to sky broadband, all working fine with bt.

Thanks in advance!!

I believe that you no-longer need to extract the username and password. See the posts above.

The biggest hurdle to using using your own router with Sky is compatibility with their implementation of MER. If your router doesn't support it then it'll never work with Sky (even if it'll work with most other ISPs).

I realise this is an old thread, but I've bought a d7000 to replace sky router (er110) do you have to use wore shark to find out your username / password?

Also do I just use the stock firmware of the d7000?

Cheers

Nice to see this thread revisited recently as I’m pulling my hair out with the Sky Q Hub

Had to switch to Sky after moving to a new house that can’t have Virgin Media

Is this worth doing?

Yes it defiantly is i moved from the sky q hub to a Asus RT-AC87U the wifi si tons tons better more stable reaches further, you have more controle. i did have to to put the asus merlin firmware on it but then i had already been using it since i got the router.

It is a pain the backside the fact there is no definitive guide on how to do it but even i manged to do it. the hardest part is actually getting your username and password(and yes i did need it) using wireshark. after that its a breeze. i synked up faster(real world).

It is worth doing more especially if you have a lot of devices people using the same internet as the asus one handles a lot of traffic far far better.

Thanks for the response - between the Asus and Netgear there seems some good options.

Just had enough of the Sky Q Hub; sky are doing an investigation into my line at the moment but I expect the results to show all ok when i know there is an issue.

I can sit there with my PC pinging google.co.uk with no drops although I'll be kicked from games because of loss of connection, nVidia Shield will drop all the time (wireless or wired) so any streamings stops, phones loose connection or slow down all the time to the point of turning wifi off and going 4G and my wife cant connect a laptop to wifi unless she is sat next to the hub itself!?!

i purchased a netgear nighthawk the other day and i am using with sky broadband, i have it connected but it seems to disconnect every 12 hours or so where as my sky router would stay connected for months have i set this up correctly
