Hi there - I'm looking for advice cos I'm REALLY not a computer expert ! Following motherboard problems, my son's Asus G53JW-SX053V (bought Dec 2010 for 1200 euros) will be replaced by the electrical shop where we bought it. It's a "standard exchange" so should be exchanged for a computer with identical specs - as near as poss. They are offering him an Asus X53SV-SX750V (price 800 euros). We've seen the Asus G53SX-SX240V (price 1100 euros) which would also be an equivalent. What would be your advice as he uses it for gaming ? I just don't want to be fobbed off with an inferior product. Thanks for your help.

the g series is a gaming laptop, the x series is just consumer. Performance wise it will be a big step down in gaming performance.

They are trying to fob you off. If they are replacing the g53 due to faults you should be given an equivalent g series.

Hi there, the important part is the graphics card, I advise either A) you get a friend who REALLY knows what they are talking about or B) post on here are double check.

From that kind of offer do not trust the shop.

A quick basic guide is do not accept a machine unless it has:

1) An Nvidia graphics card with a middle number of 6 or higher. You currently have a GTX460M, so that or a GTX560M, a GT555m is much worse than both for example so X6X or higher.

2) An AMD graphics card 5850 or above, again same rule but with the second number, 58xx ot 68xx or higher).

Anything lower than these is a significant step down! You are at the tipping point with that card between two different tiers of graphics chips.
