Replacing CPU Cooler

Just a quick question:

Is it easy to replace a stock cooler at a later date once you're PC is all built?

I only ask because of cooling paste, will it be a nightmare to clean off the CPU to install the new cooler?

Just trying to save cash and building a barebones system, and so planning on adding all the juicy bits at a later date and then overlocking.

Depends on the replacement cooler.

It's easy to clean off the old gunk - isopropyl alcohol and paper towel will do the job - or any propriety CPU cleaner.

As for the cooler - some can be attached straight onto the exsiting socket and usually come with pre-applied paste.

However, better coolers will usually require the motherboard to be removed as a backplate will need to be fitted. But with a decent cooler this will only need to be done with the initial fit.

Also, you may need to apply the paste - but a rice/pea sized blob in the middle of the CPU will usually suffuce - and then carefully placing and securing the HS ontop - following diagnonal method of tightening the screws - bit by bit. (unless you have exposed heatpipes on the base of the HS then you will need to use a slightly more gunk and apply it to the pipes...).

If you have high profile memory - be sure to get a cooler that will clear the fins...
