To everyone who answered by thread a little while ago - I was wrong on which camera my wife had, so let me just start again.

So, my wife had a Canon 400D camera - We've had it about 10 years.
She loves the DSLR as a platform and although she hasn't "gone silly" with lenses, We have the 18-55, the 50mm and a longer reach lens (not Canon brand, but obviously canon fit).
The camera has taken a tumble and alas it's looking like a write off - unfortunately she has managed to drop things well and it looks like the 18-55 lens has also taken some punishment, so will probably look to replace body and lens.

I can see that I paid £400 for it back in 2007 and that is the kind of budget I'd like to stick to again.
We are not necessarily invested in Canon. By going for a different brand (with a 18-55 lens) then we'd be two lenses down which we can look to replace - it's not as if I'd lose £1000's by swapping brand.
She is very much an amateur and if one camera has "professional features" another doesn't that wouldn't necessarily swing the choice.

Any advice on a replacement would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

If you are not looking to expand, or invest in a ton of glass, I would seriously consider a used Fuji X-T1. For an amateur an EVF is much easier to use than an OVF, especially it is 100% coverage, you see what you shoot before you take the shot, it is a little like shooting with your phone in a lot of ways. You can easily get that used under £400, then get a kit lens if you like. The sensor size is actually a little bigger than Canon’s too, being a 1.5x crop instead of 1.6x, and I would say the performance of the sensor is much better in almost all aspects from the 400D. I am perfectly happy with my X-T1 with a 23/35/56 mm primes, it’s my “fun” camera. It may be a few years old now but it still have a flip screen, full metal build, and wifi connection to your phone, so you can wifi photos to your phone or even control the camera to take selfies with the phone.

The other option is you can pick up a Sony A6000 with a kit lens at the moment for £400 (inc cash back). The problem with Sony lenses are they are not cheap, but then again, there are no cheap lenses really in FuJi either.

My first DSLR was a 400D and I loved it !
If you do not want to stick with Canon there is a host of options. The Fuji X-T1 is not a bad shout actually, however so is the Sony A6300 or A6500 and with an Sigma MC11 adaptor you can still use some canon EF fit glass.
The Canon 700D, 750D would be good replacement and they both will have similar controls and menu to the 400D

Another shout for the Sony with adaptor. Will be a noticeable step up from the Canon 400D and can be bought with a nice sony kit lense and then use the canon 50mm and long reach lens until you are ready or want to swap to native.

I'd rather an xt-1 over the a6000 simply due to lens choice, easier to access manual controls and better handling. The only time id rather the a6000 is for fast moving subjects. Shot with both.
