hi
the sub on my logitech z680 speaker system has gone. now the original sub was 8 ohms and rated at about 180w. does can someone tell me if i was to replace it with a 4ohm 200-300 watt sub and never use the sub at high volumes would it be alright or would it cause the amp to below as its not 8 ohms

I thought the z680s were similar to the latest z5500, so do all the speakers plug into the back of the sub, then the control pob also plugs in there ?

If so then you can't replace it except for another sub. This is because the sub also contains the 5 channel amp for the speakers and the control dock interface.

this is not recommended.although this might work at low volumes it is unsafe to do so.if you really cant get a replacement you may be able to use a matching transformer but it will generally degrade the sonic performance of the amplifier.

-ad- the sub connects to the amp by two wires like any ordinary sub.

ataro i cant get an exact replacement but have got a choice between a generic sub that is 8 ohms and about 200 watts and an alpine sub that is about 300 watts but 4 ohms. i wanted to replace with the alpine as that should sound good. whats the worst that can happen if the ohms arent the same?

If the impedance of the load (speaker) is lower than the source, it will overload the source causing some chain reaction in it.Depending on how good the electronics protection of the amplifier it will either overheat (thermal protection kicks in or not), short circuit over current circuit kicks in etc. but it will only boils down to blows your speaker, blows your amp., or both, or shutdown with out causing damaged due to very good protection circuits but this seldom happens.Whats the size of your sub?

the size of the sub is 8inches. so if i was to replace it with the 8 ohm sub thats a bit higher in watts then the original. as long as i dont use the sub on full volume i shouldnt have no problems then?

If you change it with the same impedance 8Ω then you will be able to use it at full power. As long as the wattage of the replacement is equal or higher than the original.

Have you spoke to Logitech?

Theyre Very good with warranties, they've even replaced things for me when I cant locate the receipt.

logitech replaced it and told me to throw this away but i thought id try and get it working so i can use it with my pc

now i was wondering can someone help me. ive been looking for an 8inch 8 ohm sub for under £30 and have come across 2 that are in the budget. spec wise which one looks better

Are you talking about a set of these?

Because if you are, you won't be able to replace it with anything other than another unit as -Ad- said. The sub contains the amps to drive all the speakers, plus the power all gets routed through it, then there the serial connection to the control pod. Good luck finding a replacement sub with all that in. :p

no the rest of the set works. its just that the sub doesnt so ive removed the old sub and am looking to replace it. ive narrowed it down to them 2 but not sure which one to go for so was wondering can someone tell me spec wise which is the best

Are you just hoping to use the speakers and drive them with a different amp then? Because they are not active speakers, their amplification comes from the subwoofer (which you won't get from an oem sub). That would also mean the control pod would be useless.

Notice the speaker connections.

Ah! You didn't explain yourself very well. :p

Hopefully the replacement won't sound as horribly boomy though, I despise mine. :(

i think i actually like the boom of it:D as its sounds good with dance/bassline music.

bump
was hoping to order them now but the one i wanted has gone out of stock. now the specs for the original sub are 8 ohms 70Watt/140Watt max. now the only one available on ebay is 8 ohms but is 250w/500w maxx. would this damage the amp if i was to buy it and only use it at low volumes

flex i got 1 spare 8inch sub for a creative S750 spk. if the dimension and mounting fits i think it will be a good replacement for your sub.just contact me via trust if your interested.

Trying to drop a random driver into a ported cab will create a poor sound. The box is tuned acoustically to the parameters of the driver unit, and those parameters are far more extensive than power handling and impedence (there are at least 14 parameters though you can work from fewer). This is the unit Logitech used I believe:

Tang Band W8-670Q, but they arn't especially common in the UK. Mabye Logitech can supply one, I don't know.

The units on ebay give insufficient specs but out of the two the kevlar unit should be the best (the other is pro type so will probably have too high an fs to give sub bass). Neither will be up to the standard of the original though in this box, the Tang Band is rather a good budget driver actually!

If your still keen I might be able to find a more suitable unit in the UK? but I can't guarantee anything suitable will be available in budget, let me know :)
