I know this is a ps3 thread and all, but as your on the subject of HDD's and also saving myself from starting a new thread. can anyone explain why my 360 HDD registers as 13gig or something close to that when empty?

Does the software take up the other 7gig or so? I mean afterall it's a 20gig drive.

just been wondering why people are bothering to upgrade their drives so soon, I haven't used mine a lot but have loads of room free. unless people are using them as a media centre?

20GB is the unformated size. It's probably around 18GB when formated (the PS3 HDD shows as 55GB and not 60GB for example) and then you have the other files that are already on there. I think my PS3 drive only showed around 50GB free when I first bought it.

the best way imo is to leave the stock drive in there and use an external drive for you music and films ect

500gb external drive. its quite nice :p

its a vantec nexstar 3 usb2.0/e-sata caddy, as recommended by BilyTheImpaler:) it's connected via usb to the ps3, yes. it does match very well, although it is polished metal rather than plastic, it matches pretty much perfectly and works just how you'd expect it to. no problems at all:) like i said, its just the smart way of doing things. that was the ps3's drive is left for the games and demos it was meant for:)

The only disadvantage, if you can really call it that, is that you won't get the video thumbnails in the XMB? Is that right?

I suspect you're probably right, but you have to record the thumbs yourself anyways
