My mother seems to think that she can't put 'normal' tyres on her Cooper Convertible. Whereas, I think that she can providing she has a can of that puncture repair stuff to satisfy the MOT requirements (as there isn't room for a spare).

Can someone who knows for sure confirm who is right?

Ta.

No problem with putting non RFs on at all. Go to any test centre for verbals if she needs more convincing.

Just stick some tyre weld in the boot.

Slight hijack, but - is any tyre repair kit actually any good? A roadside tyre repair kit that is supposed to let any numpty fix their puncture instead of changing a wheel seems like a bit of a fail IMO

Isn't punctures what the AA and RAC for? for women at least?

Never saw the point of runflats unless you plan on using it as a getaway car and you drive over a stinger

My GF has runflats and refuses to change then because she previously had a puncture late one night. Without runflats she would have been a lone female on her own on the side of an unknown road in the dark. With runflats she just.... Drove home.

But if it was my car they would be gone in a flash. No mot requirement for a can of tyre weld, but you may find that the AA only tow you to a garage rather than all the way hole if you get a puncture.

Only thing I'd mention is I think it's common to replace all 4 at the same time rather than 2 at a time.

It should be mandatory to replace runflats with proper tyres. Makes a huge difference, especially to comfort and noise.

I was given to understand that the spare wheel was an mot requirement IF the car has one. Happy to be corrected though.

Correct. If there is a spare it has to be roadworthy, although if you have an unroadworthy one just remove it before the MOT.

Incorrect. Why don't people read the manual before posting "facts"? It's freely available.

Section 4.1
Tyres

This inspection applies to:
Tyres fitted to the road wheels only. The vehicle presenter should be informed when it is noticed that there is a defective tyre on a spare wheel.

It could be made from balloons, or a block of cheese, it could be a racing slick, it could be missing. It doesn't matter.
The spare tyre is not part of the test.

I hope your joking. I fear you may not be :(.

So many of the so called "facts" are blindly accepted by so many people that its not beyond reason that the people whos job it is to impose the rules also believe them. It's the same story with the whole "it was priced at £x therefore you legally have to sell it to me" rubbish. Most shop keepers or till staff don't know that this is completely false.

Cheers guys. I've spoken to her again, and brought her round a bit. However, she's now decided she's getting rid and getting a 4x4. Women!

That 'spare wheel must be legal' story has been going about since the early 90s at least, was it an MOT requirement at one point or a really long lasting urban myth?
